Is it still raining ?
today and tomorrow will be the worst of the heat wave here
I got my disability pension
they owed me 8 months of pension so I have a bit of money to buy some gear
It gave me headaches … so many things to chose …
the worst is : How should I keep the guitars ?
some people like to have them hanging on a wall but I read that keeping them in a case is better
its very complex to buy stuff in fact
Glad to hear that, Deborah.
There are others who are wiser and more experienced than I am. But as far as I understand, provided you don’t live in an extreme climate either super hot and humid, or incredibly dry or maybe extreme rapid fluctuations, then hanging is fine.
I live in South Africa and the heatwave you describe is fairly normal for us in summer, nothing too drastic. My guitars all hang and no ill effects to date.
its hard to describe what is extreme … for us 34° is extreme !
in Winter we can go -10° , once we even had a -17°
cases are extremely expensive
I thought about buying a rack maybe … like this one :
I think most signficant is moisture, either extreme.
No, it’s not raining right now… but we are waiting for the next big thunderstorm today, which of course will bring more rain
As to weather conditions. Here in Southern Finland, it’s not unheard of to experience several days with -20 C or minus -25 C in winter and around + 25 C or +28 C (sometimes more on some days) in summer. I usually keep my guitars out on guitar stands and they seem to be able to take it quite well… though tuning is always required
Good news about the pension. Now have fun going just a bit crazy buying guitar stuff
I will for sure , my rpoblem is to stay into my budget , there are so many things to buy
If I buy cases , im way above my budget
you re so lucky to have rain , im so jealous
@stitch @TheMadman_tobyjenner Rick, Toby, any advice for Deborah on keeping guitars, based on your knowledge and experience?
The real problem is when you have rapid changes in temperature/humidity, like going from one country to another. If you’re in pretty much the same geographical area throughout the year, and only have to cope with the usual summer/winter cycle, then leaving your guitars out shouldn’t be a problem. Even going from hot to cold climates it’s only a problem until the instrument stabilises to it’s new conditions, usually a few days, a week at maximum (you may need a truss rod adjustment in these circumstances but you won’t break the guitar).
They will go out of tune over time but you should be tuning up at the start of each session anyway so isn’t really a problem. Oh, and they will get dusty if you leave them out, so more regular cleaning might be required for those you don’t play often.
I have my guitars out of the cases. It also makes it easier to just pick up and play, rather than having to get the case out, find a strap etc. They do nag you though “You haven’t practised today, have you!” they say, well at least mine do
Cases are expensive, unless you’re travelling a lot they make little sense. If you only go out occasionally then just get a gig bag rather than a hard case.
Thanks
I will do that
I m trying to find space in my room for a rack
I’ve started to look at racks also. I have 4 guitars out in my room, each on individual mini A-frame stands which once you’ve got more than a couple of them probably take up more space than a single stand of the right size. I’ll be looking for something that takes 2 acoustics and 2 or 3 electrics.
When I bought my first acoustic guitar I got a bit paranoid about humidity so I bought myself a cheap humidity monitor. It’s almost certainly not the most accurate thing in the world but what was obvious is that the only thing that really affects the humidity in my house (in the UK) is the central heating in winter which dries the air. As others have said though even that doesn’t involve wild swings of humidity which I think is what causes problems
I like the A frames stands but it takes a lot of space when you have several guitars
Agree to that fully. I have two of those and one double stand for my three guitars and banjo and that’s occupying more space than a rack would do to holde the same amount or one more…
Should I add some more instruments to the stable (it’s more a question of when than yes or no ) I will also opt for a rack instead of going for more individual stands, but will keep the A-shapes for the guitars most in use.
Congrats on the pension allowing you to satisfy some GAS. But now it comes to the hard decisions… Enjoy the shopping, Deborah!
worse than that , i have a spending blockage
im not used to have money so the sum is so huge for me that im afraid to spend it
just what i had in thoughts
thats the best option
Oh, totally relatable for me. When I had my first “real” salary paid a few years back I wanted to treat myself with a new guitar and I just couldn’t. Took me a while to let it go and am still hesitant these days. It took me a year to finally decide to buy a looper.
In the end … I didnt buy the rack because i wont buy the APX600 untill a few months
I made space this morning for 2 A frames in my room
plonk plonk is hanging on the wall in the other room
Doing housework during a heat wave … i must be crazy !!!
I just rack them and stack them and no extra care regards the environment. I check tuning before playing or shortly after a warm up and most stay pretty solid. Its felt a bit more clammy this year, so I might have to check humidity but for now, they are all racked and within reach.
Using a 9 gtr Gravity rack from Thomann right now.
thanks i ll look this item
Hi Deborah,
