I forgot to work on the F chord …

Im trying to have a light touch while strumming have you ever seen the rain and House of the rising sun , its really something to work on to make it sound musical , pleasant to the ears

When I play power chords my pinky locks up and gets stuck , its annoying cause I can t change chords
is it a muscle issue ?

no guitar tomorrow , having a one day break

How does it get stuck?

Pinkies tend to have independence issues (or kind of separation anxiety ) with fourth finger, so the two want to do everything together. It’s a matter of patience and practice, I guess. Try to move your pinky while holding down the power chord could be a possible exercise to create less dependency? That’s at least on idea coming to my mind.

no it s not a matter of independency , it just gets stuck in the position of holding the chord
as if its double jointed

I can t move it in an another position

Now I got it. Somehow, I was forming the power chord with fingers 2 and 3 instead of fourth and pinky in my imagination. :woman_facepalming:

There is a condition that might be causing this (don’t have it myself, but there are plenty of folks knowing that), that a finger (often pinky) gets locked and then releases with a kind of snap. Had to ask google and it seems to be named Trigger Finger.

I also recall Justin talking about it in one of his lessons, but unfortunately don’t recall which one. :frowning: If I find it again, I will link it here.

Maybe you could try practicing changing between power chords like in one minute chord changes first, lifting your fingers rather than sliding the hand. But lifting it only ever so slightly that your pinky won’t get stuck? I hope this makes sense.

Another possibility to overcome this is using only your fourth finger to barre the two strings of the power chord so pinky is not involved at all. Lots of players do it like that. Maybe it’s worth experimenting with this a little.

thanks a lot

I will try different stuf to see if I can resolve this issue

how can you do that in 2 different frets ? ( B5 C5 G5 etc )

no thats not this
I think its just the middle joint locking out probably due to lack of muscles
Looks like squeezing a stress ball for 5 min every day would help
I need to find a ball now

Oh, my bad. I should have specified this a little more. For 2-note Power Chords, you can simply use index for the bass note and the fourth finger for the second note. For example G5: 35xxxx you play low E-String 3rd fret with index and A string 5th fret with fourth finger. No barring necessary.

For the 3-note Power Chord you still play bass with index, but the other 2 notes you can play with the fourth finger barring over A string and D string in case root is on 6th string, or D and G string (5th string root). Given the G5: 355xxx the fourth finger would barre the fifth fret on A-string and D-string instead using the pinky on the D-string.

Hope that helps.

Great, glad it’s not the thing I found and has an easy fix! If you can’t find a ball, just squeeze a tangled pair of socks

thanks I ll try this
I should play the song once with the fourth finger and once with the pinky to strengthen it

I have this at home , maybe I should use it

Sounds like “doigt à ressaut” to me. I get it in quite a few fingers but fortunately my picking hand. Actually blew all 8 fingers when first moved in as had to fence the whole 0.6 hectare plot because of the dog. So wheelbarrows of concrete for posts where needed back and forth for days all over the place, ended up with everything locked but all self induced ! Ended up with “les corticoïdes” injections in all 8 fingers !!

Rather than use Index (root) ring (5th) and pinkie (root octave) either play the 2 finger power chord Root 5th only (actually more common) or mini barre the 5th and 4th string with the ring finger for PC with 6th string root. 4th and 3rd for 5th string root.

No no these will add no benefit to your playing and are just a gimmick, Yes I bought one years ago and they suck. You’d be better off just playing 4 fret chromatic runs.

E string fret 5 6 7 8
A string fret 5 6 7 8
yada yada

those grip things won’t come close to actually fret practice as the gaps don’t emulate the fretboard and need herculean pressure to press the plasy tubes down. Counter productive for playing as you need to use just enough pressure not choke the neck to death!!

Day 216 / 43 weeks streak :

whats to improve :

  • Strumming at faster tempo like house of the rising sun
  • the notes on the neck
  • Fingers independence and legato on the intro of sweet child of mine
  • passing from a chord to a power chord , Im too slow to change
  • changing from G to F barre in order to play Losing my religion by REM

Well played guitar throughout all the pieces: you seemed particularly in sync with Edge of Seveteen. Did you do any of the other instruments via DAW of some sort? Also, if you were using OBS, why no video? Very good playing: very enjoyable.

thanks for your answer
i hoped there would be more

what other instruments ? the backing track comes from the justin guitar app ( musopia )

its just me and my grestch plugged into a pedal , plugged into an amp , plugged into a scarlett solo , plugged into OBS

because Toby said that last time I posted a recording :

I ve never made an AVOYP yet

I had a listen too but I’m just not qualified to give worthwhile feedback. It sounds good, clean and consistent to my ears which is a really solid base to build from. Hopefully more experienced players or your guitar teacher can suggest what the next step might be. All that practice you do definitely shows though :+1:
