Mac's learning log

And I’m sure the power chords will get easier for you over time!

I found them really hard when that first lesson in Justin’s course came along (don’t remember where exactly that was).
Still today, I find them not so easy, but it’s much better than when I started. To be honest, I very rarely practiced them… should do that more… but sometimes, finding a good overdriven guitar sound makes it much so more fun to practice

I should really record a power chord song
just to show what I can do ( or not )

thats why I try to always keep one power chord song in my practice list .
practice practice practice to get better
( but I still dont like them )

Overtime day 397 :

I had some free time this afternoon and the weather was fine enough to let me watch some videos

Module 15

watched the video : Great Guitar Tone Starts Here!

watched the video : 4 Easy Steps to Transcribing Songs (for beginners!)

@domi7 was right saying that I should try a good overdriven guitar sound when playing power chords
I usually never touch my guitar settings
watching the video about tones gave me some ideas of things to try

I grabbed my guitar , toyed a bit with the knobs and switch and then played again : King of the disco by Yousician
I was quite pleased with the results
I should probably record this power chord song  ( easy one )

I did a bit of transcribing on Wonderful Tonight by Clapton
I just showed the riff to my teacher but not the whole song and I forgot to ask him about a part in the middle of the song
and now the school is closed for the summer ,I m on my own
So I transcribed it
I dont know if I ve got it right but it sounds good in my ears so I must be close
that was easy since Marcus showed which scale to use , knowing where to start was a big hint

Deborah,

I am impressed by your practice routines. You are obviously very disciplined and it really showed in your latest videos as you have made great improvements. Im surprised how much you manage to fit into a daily practice routine. How long do those practice sessions take you every day?

I practice about 1-2 hours per day but I don’t manage to cover anywhere near as much material. I’d like to practice longer but then I start feeling guilty that my wife will say I’m ignoring her.

Perhaps my practice sessions are nott structured enough.

@Prof_Thunder

How long do those practice sessions take you every day?

In winter , I practice 4 hours everyday minus one day off every week
In summer its too hot to practice a lot so I split it in half , so currently its 2 hours everyday

I can practice 4 hours a day because I almost dont work anymore

I structure my practice a lot
I just reached this lesson : https://www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/supercharge-your-guitar-practice-with-timeboxing-bg-001
and I realised that I ve been using time boxing since the beginning of my guitar journey

for example , I never play a song more than twice , so I practice a song only 15 minutes max in a practice session
I dont use a timer but I stick to : never more than twice
If I make mistakes , its part of the learning process , I ll just re try the next day
Everytime I ve not followed this principle , it was a catastrophe !
Sometimes I make too much mistakes so I try more than twice and I always end up being frustrated , nervous … and the more I try , the worse it gets !

Each songs have a specific technic I want to practice
one for the Blues , one for power chords , one fingerstyle , one for bends etc
Each songs target what I want to learn

the fun part in my practice is the challenge of the week in Yousician
I just love to discover a new song every week , its a mystery box I open every week

I m done with a song once I can play it smoothly enough to be happy with it
I trust my ears
for songs on Yousician , if the song is juste an exercice , not omething I want to record , I m done once I can play it and can gold stars all parts

I hope it will help you

Ho and I may i ve bought a new guitar yesterday evening
nothing fancy its just a mini acoustic

Deborah, wow! Four hours of practice per day in the winter and two hours of practice per day in summer. Now I understand how you have been able to fit in so many different areas of study on the guitar. I only have managed 45 minutes per day in winter and 30 minutes per day in summer, so I really have to be organized to cover multiple areas and still not overly successful. Fortunately I have 50 years of experience as a beginning guitarist to fall back on for beginnnig songs. You have made a lot of progress in a short amount of time and you have earned it.

We all have our different circumstances that allows or prevent us to play several hours
Doing our best to get the most out of a practice session is what we should aim for whatever the time spent

2 days ago I put Dunlop straps locks on my dear Gretsch
The strap got loose once I dont want it to happen again

Since I was working on my guitar I decided to also change the strings
I shouldnt have …
My brain was in one of his blanck moment and I forgot to change the strings one by one …
I snapped all 6 strings
My Gretsch has an anchored compensated wrap-around bridge , without strings holding it … it simple fell
messing all my set up
So yesterday I went to Roanne ( nearest big town ) and brought my Gretsch to the local guitar seller and asked if he could fix my mess
that was the first time he was meeting such a bridge but he understood quickly how it worked
He also screwed back the tuning pegs which were getting loose
Now my Grestch is all fixed and works fine
He was very kind and only asked 10 euros for the repair ( a Luthier would have been way more expensive )

I hope I wont mess again next time

Yesterday was a no guitar day since I was tired from the little trip next town
I had some free time before the bus back home so I went to a awesome library and bought a very interesting book ^^

Oh and I also finished to create this game for my publisher
an Halloween themed game

I’m glad the music shop was able to fix your guitar situation! I’m still not brave enough to attempt string changes… I’ve gotta mentally work myself up to it.

Good luck with all the medical stuff. Hope it’s uneventful and doesn’t take up the whole day! I’ll take my mum to a single appointment at nine and drive straight home afterwards and somehow it’s three pm and time is a lie…
