Loved that Mark. Think I’ll add this song to my ‘To do’ list after that. Really enjoyable.
That sounded grear Notter, you sing beautifully! I also liked the consistent rhythm and the tone of your guitar. Well done
Really nice Mark! I picked up some details of the lyrics from your performance that I never noticed in the original. The Charles Darwin line is great.
I always enjoy your relaxed delivery and chill playing style, it’s very calming. Like it’s a lazy day on the weekend and I’ve got nowhere in particular I need to be.
@aussieretiree @Willsie @Silvia80 Thank you all for taking the time to check it out and for your kind words!
@Colberg69 - it’s a lot of fun to learn and play, highly recommend it.
@jkahn Thanks! I could probably have upped the BT volume a bit yes, the level was pretty much right for the verses but as I tried to up the dynamics coming into and during the chorus is where it needed more to keep me honest. Those were the sections I was slightly ahead of the track I think.
@direvus Cheers Brendan, some of the lyrics in this are very off the wall, actually one of the things generally I’m loving about learning all these songs, there’s lyrics I either had no idea about or had completely incorrect in my head!!
Lovely performance, Mark. You are doing well with smooth strumming, generally clean chords including some quick changes, and your singing suits these songs a treat. Tips already given, so nothing more for me to say but keep doing what you are doing.
I generally don’t comment on the songs, but have to say Automatic For the People is a wonderful album, start to finish IMHO. Well worth a listen if you’ve never heard it.
Thanks David! I was 17 when it came out so was firmly part of my teenage influences, I agree with you, an end to end awesome album!
I was 27 and REM was one of my favourite bands. I had most of the albums they’d released up until then.
@Notter congratulations on your G2 consolidation work. This one sounds very good to me; really nice tone and rhythm work. Vocal was good too. A nice performance overall.
99% up, as you could have smiled more . seriously, well done.
At a previous OM, I quoted the artist Momus paraphrasing Mr. Warhol by stating that in the future everyone will be famous for fifteen people.
Well, to answer the question I recently posed “Am I famous yet?”, I must be getting closer to my quota
Thank you for the smile as well as shout out, Mark
Automatic for the People was one of the last REM albums I was able to get into.
It still hits me sometimes when Stipe sings: Let’s play Twister, let’s play Risk. So many of hours of my childhood in Beirut were spent doing just that. Sigh.
Back to business-
Woah- 5 ½ minutes of steady strumming, clean changes and solid, if gentle vocals.
Solid as a rock.
As a matter of interest, what did you use as a backing track?
Keep it up… and keep smiling
@oldhead49 A reciprocal 99% thumbs up I’ll also take, thanks Dave!!
@brianlarsen I had to really after being called out for looking like a miserable sod!!
The backing track was “borrowed” from this YouTube Channel (Zoom Entertainments) . I recorded it via connecting my iPad to my Yamaha THR (bluetooth) and running that into my DAW. There’s easier ways using other PC applications but it works for me. They’re pretty good backing tracks, used them a few times. Thank you for the listen and comments, I’m always smiling on the inside
Loved that Mark an all round thoroughly enjoyable performance
Mark, that was excellent. Great playing and singing. A great tune to pick, which you really did justice too. A wonderful performance.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but on your Bm chord try dropping your index finger down so that the tip of it is muting your low E string.
Thanks Stefan Yes the Bm Barre muting low E has been pointed out a couple of times
Hello Marc,
Great job! The song really suited your voice and playing style and it was a fantastic consolidation performance. My impression was that you were on a higher level. If I had stumbled over you playing it in a pub, I would definitely have settled in for the evening.
I didn’t actually know this song so checked it out and noticed that R.E.M play the chorus louder which gives good build up and release. Might be something to try going forward?
Regards
Greg
Hi there Greg, thanks for the listen and feedback, I need to find your regular pub by the sounds of it
I really enjoy playing this so it’ll evolve with the finer details like the chorus as you mention. Thanks again!
Hi Mark,
Nice one. Like your play and vox! Also special call out on the color and tone on your guitar. It is a nice looking axe and you play it up to its capability!
I heard a couple of pops near the start on your vox. Not sure of your mic, but you can put a damper on those pops by using a pop filter…
All the best and be well,
LB
Smile for Brian ? And so you should Mark that was great. REM are one of those bands if it wasn’t for MTV would just have passed me by, as I’d pretty much given up on UK radio in the early 80 and was becoming a 40 something old codger just listening to my own collection of LPs. But I liked their refreshingly different sound, amongst all the other carp that was around at the time. You certainly did this justice and I am sure folks have provide critique and insight, so I was quite happy to take a back seat and just enjoy the ride. Well done sir !
Thanks Toby!!
Honestly gobsmacked by the positivity coming back to me from this. You’re all too kind
Nah no need, twas great !
Impressive. Really well done. Thanks for sharing.
