Miss Sophie Said by Lisa_S

Hello dear guitar friends,

long time no see in this section of the community. :joy:

Before a weak moment of insanity (just kidding, I really enjoy it so far) made me sign up for BLIM 4, I already signed up for the 7 day songwriting challenge hosted by How To Write Songs (some folks of you know them) to channel my inner songwriter again and tickle the creativity again. Even though I didn’t expect to fully finish a song in that short time, I did! What a feeling.

The main things to take home for me: Not writing because of ā€œno timeā€ or ā€œonly a few minutes per dayā€ is just a stupid excuse. It is possible even within a busy schedule when you break it down and focus on one specific thing in short sessions. Also, there’s no need to ā€œwait until creativity strikesā€. It’s coming while doing. And yes, this lecture is mainly for myself, to keep that in mind and write, for what it’s worth!

So to stop my ramblings just a few notes on the song itself: We had a prompt to write about, whatever comes up to ā€œNew Year’s Eveā€ - now the Germans among us will know why I chose this title (and maybe a handful others ). So I did and came up with what follows in a moment. I decided to write in 6/8 time and guess what, I suck at accompanying in 6/8 (hardly ever use it), so a basic picking pattern must do it for now. This definitely need some more variation. Also not sure how to link the bridge properly for now.
Before I finally post it (sorry for the wall of text): Feedback is always welcome!
Apologies for the low audio, it’s all my phone can do (I checked all the settings, it’s truly disappointing).

Lyrics

Verse 1:

The last night of the year, time to reflect
My resolution-list gets resurrected
Not a single bullet could be checked
Instead, crossed out years get collected

Pre-Chorus:

As Miss Sophie said

Chorus:

The same procedure as every year
The same, the same, the same
The same procedure as every year
The same, the same, the same

Verse 2:

My jogging shoes stare at me in disgust
Tasting the cold smoke of all my last cigarettes
All the ā€˜must reads’ on my shelf collecting dust
Superficial ideals turn into regrets

Pre-Chorus + Chorus

Bridge:

Does the calendar tell me when it’s time to change?
Does the calendar tell me what’s within my range?
Does the calendar tell me I’m ready to adjust?
No, it’s not the calendar I should trust
I change whenever I’m ready to do
Having the willpower to push through
It’s not tied to the change of year
ā€˜Cause otherwise it willl be

Chorus

Outro

The Same
The Same
The Same, The Same, The Same

Thanks for checking in.

I’ve been waiting excitedly all day for this release to drop and I wasn’t disappointed when it did.

That was truelly lovely, Lisa. The finger picking was on point. The chord progression with the sprinkle of embellishments sounded really good and accompanied the lyrics and vocals so well.

The arrangement and dynamics were really well thought out; it worked so well both in telling the story and keeping the listeners attention. I really liked the change from the verse to chorus.

The lyrics were well written. You must have got top marks in the seven day song writing challenge.

Overall a fantastic tune, very well played and sung.

You should be very pleased with yourself. Well done. Look forward to hearimg the others when you’ve finished them.

I don’t agree! Your playing fits perfectly!
What a nice song! Like James already said it’s also so well played! And in seven days! Also your vocals are very nice and everything works so well together!

Truly amazing! :star_struck:

PS. The chords in the verse sound great!

Now I have the sketch playing in my head, Miss Lisa :champagne: :tiger:

I’ll join the choir of those saying you definitely can accompany yourself in 6/8.

Your song leaves me feeling warm inside as does your your singing. The chords in the chorus sound great (I’ll have to take a closer look still). Percussive hits? Yes, please.

My favourite section(s) of your song are clearly part 2 of the bridge and the following chorus.

I hope my resevation for your first EP is still valid? :slightly_smiling_face:

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

What a lovely song, Lisa, and so well performed.

Others before me have really said it all, I can only agree and add my applause.

Personally, your lyric resonates with me so well, echoes much of my own thinking.

What else should I add … the chorus keeps my attention extra sharp :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:, but the playing and singing are already good enough for not drifting away in my head , but it gives an extra + :grinning_face_with_big_eyes: …

well…BIS BIS BIS

Greetings :glowing_star:

So well done on the song and the performance! Very enjoyable
It’s really catchy! I’ll be singing along to it in my head and/or humming it for a while.
It’s very inspiring too, the text before the video and also that you made this in 7 days!! :star_struck:

I think everyone else has said it all about the song. I’ll add that I think you have the look of a performer: you look relaxed and comfortable. You engage with the camera (audience). You smile. You seem to be enjoying playing the song, and we can’t help but enjoy listening to it.
Next song, please. : )

That was so good, Lisa! I listened/watched it twice. And thanks for adding the lyrics. As said above, great vocals, playing. Lovely embellishments. The volume was fine too, I thought. Looking forward to more from you and best wishes on your BLIM Lessons!

Oh wow, Lisa, that is wonderful.

You said it yourself.

I have just recommended the HWS channel to one of my students and mentioned the 7-day challenge. Here’s you showing the value of taking on a commitment and sticking with it.
Cool indeed.
