Was in Vienna last week and toured this museum in recommendation from my classical guitar instructor. Basically, posting to keep some of the memories fresh.
The museum holds collections of the oldest guitars and other instruments on the planet but some items of interest:
Hurdy Gurdy- an instrument played mostly by street beggars going back hundreds of years (Hurdy Gurdy Man)
Glass Harmonica- An instrument invented by Benjamin Franklin when he was in Europe. Its about 4 feet long and has a series of glass bowls stacked on each other. It was used by Mozart in some of his compositions.
Metronome- the original
Gitarren Capotasto- the original Capo
Definitely worth a visit if you are in this beautiful city.
I really enjoy this style of music. Would probably have liked to learn this if it were popular enough to have someone teaching it.
One of my musical interests is medieval dance. In the link, the guy playing has a pretty nice instrument and does a really good job playing. His style is a bit violin-like and I tend to prefer less stopping of the crank so the drone continues on.
