In the US, when someone let’s a swear word fly in a “less than appropriate setting” like the workplace or in mixed company, we often say “Pardon my French”! Not sure where it originated, but I’ve heard it used in several different regions around the country. So, to hear it in a completely different context from a French Canadian…
Is “Pardon my French” used in other English speaking countries around the globe? Let’s hear some of you Brits or Aussies chime in… maybe some of the non-English countries as well… what expression do you use to “excuse” the slip of a swear word?
Yeah… I khow… I’m not very good with my english speaking but I tought I could change the sense of this sentense… Ambitious Excuse my bad englisk speaking because I’m french… Contraction to “Excuse my french”… Maybe I should stop saying that… Have a good evening Tod
No worries, Luc!
Your English is very understandable - no issues seeing your points here in the forum at all!
I have often noticed several of the “English is not my Mother tongue” people here & am very impressed with the ability so many of you have to communicate in English!
I really wish that learning other languages were taught with more emphasis here in the States at a young age… bi-lingual people aren’t as common here as in most other countries.
Pity.
Crashing your party late, but I’m thinking the phrase
“Pardon my French” is from an I Love Lucy episode circa 1950s.
Some of you Old Dawgs will remember it perhaps?
Thanks for your post! Yes, I know all about tendinitis unfortunately. I developed that in my right elbow area about a week ago. I don’t believe that the tendinitis is due to guitar playing but it has stifled my strumming ability. I am taking it easy for awhile in hopes that the tendinitis will clear up and go away. Have a great upcoming weekend!
61 years old and started the course 2 almost three years ago and you pretty much summed up my experience. I know I’m not going to perform on stage or get a recording contract I just want to play songs with friends and family at gatherings and that makes me happy. I’m halfway through grade 4 and don’t feel the need to rush to gain knowledge but to continue having fun.
I’m with you @fred3027. I have been with JG two plus years and am working in and out of grade 4 and 5 courses and leaning toward fingerstyle play. Looking forward to playing some songs for my two grandsons (well enough to impress their young ears) when I visit in a few weeks. Playing songs - after a lot of hard learning that’s what it is all about.
Hi Dave If I may watch my whone business … I encourage you to take very good care of your tendonitis. You and I are tendonitis colleagues I’m strugling with one of those in my right elbow too for more than a year now. Doctors. Cortisone infiltrations. Physiothérapist. Accupunture. After so much time, the tendonitis is considered “chronic” and much more difficult to get rid of… Last year I stoped playing for 4 months. Taught I got rid of it … but I was wrong. It wasn’t gone. Now, I didn’t touch the guitar since jully 2nd. Man I find the time long… I made a promise to myself… If this elbow recovers, I make myself a gift and buy a acoustic 12 strings… And I know what’s the first song I’m gonna work on… Good motivator Hope the best for you Dave. Take good care my friend.
Thank you so much for your kind words and your concern. I will pray that your desires be answered and that you will get a 12 string acoustic guitar . Take care my dear friend. Good night from the States.
How have I not come across this thread before!
For the record: I came across JG when I was 68 and still working. I was inspired to go out and get a guitar so one day on my way to the Boleyn Ground I went via Denmark Street and bought a Faith BMV that was delivered a couple of days later. 3 years later at the age of 71 I needed a triple bypass and after that I was coerced by my family to retire. Looking back now at the age of 76. I’m a bit surprised I haven’t put more time into practicing guitar than I have but I always enjoy it and that’s what really matters.
I’m currently working on the BLIM course playing an electric guitar. Although I’ve owned a couple for a long time I’ve never really been inspired to play them. Picked them up a couple of times then hung them back on the wall. BLIM has changed that and the first thing I found out was the lie that they are easier to play! Bending strings and string noise for starters destroy that idea.
Now the grandchildren are easier to take care of (I’ve shared this role with the missus since retiring) I’m indulging myself and have enrolled on a full time instrument making course at college…wonder if I’m the oldest student here? I’m going to practice Sweet Home Chicago now on my Faith: cracked and holed as it is. B****y grandchildren!
Picked up an inexpensive Fender acoustic this past June. I have searched through the web and found Justin. Now I have found all of you. Turned 63 in August. Fighting my small stubby fingers. lol looking forward to learn from Justin and all of you!
Omg! That’s even older than @oldhead49
Philosopher’s Stone, Fountain of Youth or Holy Grail?
Look forward to seeing you again next time you’re in the neighbourhood…
