Older guitar students - can 'old dogs' learn new tricks?

Hello Claudia & Welcome to the kennel!!!
I’m sure you’ll find that at only 60, there are an awful lot of people here who consider that a rather “youthful” age!!! Lots of Old Dogs who started in their late 60s or 70s!!! Congratulations on becoming cancer free, I wish you lots of success in your guitar Journey!

Hello Claudia and welcome to JustinGuitar, the Community, and this warm and cosy kennel of old dogs.
It sounds like you have had some tough times, it’s good to read that you have music with you and things are much better.
Have fun with guitar and ask if you need anything.

Thank you! I did sign up on the app so I haven’t been on the site for a few days. I’m extremely dedicated to this venture and I’m appreciative of community suppprt. Still figuring out how to post correctly had some pics of a guitar I bought wanted to know what model it is but couldn’t get it past draft to send it. Oh well I’ll figure it out :joy::joy: technology may be harder than guitar

Hi Claudia, welcome to the community and to the “old dogs” kennel. I’m 70 years young and still learning a lot. I am happy to hear that you are cancer free and had a musical outlet while getting treatment and letting your voice heal. As a singer, I love to look at as many of Justin’s Song Lessons as possible to see and hear how Justin creates guitar accompaniments at different skill levels.Since you mentioned interest in blues and of course singing in your introduction, I wanted to bring an early song lesson to your attention I’d Rather Go Blind - Etta James that is a relatively modern blues song that is simpler than 12-bar blues (just D and Em chords) and Justin uses a guest singer on this video.

Nice to meet you, Claudia. I know exactly how it is with your health issue’s I share a lot of it with you, and guitar and the love for music brought me through it, along with the help of this community and its members. When I found it while recovering in the hospital, it truly has been the best medicine I have taken in the last two years, coming up cheers HEC UK

Old Dog here. I played quite a bit about 25 years ago (mostly church and sitting around with the guys) but never really progressed much past cowboy chords. Put the guitar away when work and kids took over. Now I’m retired and thought it was a good time to jump back in. Ran through the Grade 1 modules for a review and just started Grade 2. Love it and am learning a lot. Looking forward to growing.

Hi Gregory, welcome to the community and to the “old dog” kennel. I was a cowboy chord strummer for 30 plus years and when I started the first module of grade 2, I thought “wow, Justin really knows how to challenge old open chord strummers”. Have fun advancing beyond the cowboy chords.

Well, I’m 65 so I guess I belong here. LOL. I’ve been practicing 2 years but had holes all over my technique. So, I started Grade 1 December 1st. I am working on memorizing my 5 songs.

Glad to have committed to this course!
