Older guitar students - can 'old dogs' learn new tricks?

Hi Collin @C_McG
Saying you a friendly welcome and have a nice time feels a bit stupid when I do that… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: you’ve been hanging around for a while… .
But now for your “official” hello, here in this topic, Richard will probably send you the secret login codes and teach you the secret communication terms for older people … 1st tip is usually “put your caps lock on …that sounds louder”

Greetings :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :dog:

Hi there, I am 69 years old and hope to learn to play my new :guitar:, started of with an ukulele, loved it but the guitar has more strings and therefore more possibilities, so I’ll take the challenge to learn a new trick .

Good luck Linea! You’re only 69! Coming from a 77 year old who is hoping to become a rock star! (not really)

we both will become (rock) stars if we have enough time left to practice hard :guitar:

Hi all. I’m not sure if I’m posting this in the correct place. I’m 64 and mostly self-taught. This website is incredibly generous. I’m thankful for it. I’m solid in some areas (good timing, decent ear, and some tricks) but I have real gaps. I don’t know much theory at all and therefore can’t play improvisational leads. My ability to find and create chord variations is not as expansive as it could be. When I’m up the neck I often don’t know the names of chords I’m playing. I haven’t played for some years but picked up the guitar again so that I can fill these gaps. I want to get theory down and practice leads. I’m also interested in seeing what that can do for finger picking. I don’t think this site has much focus on that but we’ll see. My main focus right now is acoustic guitar. I have a lovely Martin D15 and a Taylor 214 ce delx. I love both those guitars. I look forward to having a lot of fun here.

Hello Hugh. I’ve made a cosy area with blanket and doggie bowl for you.
Welcome. You’ve come to a great place.

Hello Hugh & Welcome to the dog house!!!
Good for you to recognize the areas that need some attention & for actively addressing them! We tend to learn a bit slower now that we’re in the (Not so) Golden Years, but you CAN teach Old Dogs new Tricks!!!
Have fun & good luck :four_leaf_clover:!!!

Thanks Tod! Can’t hurt to try. Being older I’m much better about practicing daily. There are benefits to all this gray hair.

Hi Rogier,
Yes, I received a very warm welcome here at Justin’s, train every day, have a lot of fun, and have found a nice buddy/tutor in @witkatz with whom I can exchange ideas.

Greetings,
Linea

I just discovered this topic
Does almost 54 yo count as an old dog? At least that’s how it feels when I see how slowly I’m learning to play the guitar :joy:
If there’s a spare corner in the kennel, I’d love to join you.
