Ontime's Learning Log - progress, introspections and other musings

Entry 1

I decided it was time to start a learning log.

I made a little video about something I discovered when trying transcribe a song. I was not sure where in the forums to put it so. Since I learned something cool, it would make sense to put it in my learning log which I didn’t have.

So welcome to my first update of my learning log.

I have now been playing 13 months. I missed real solid practice during summer unfortunately which set me back some. But we are squared away with new property and home.

My gear is not good, but good enough

Guitars
Urban Acoustic Guitar with damage. Originally I got it for my daughter. I will eventually try and repair it. I still play the heck out of it. It’s been my primary instrument since starting.

Knock off fender strat SSS. My buddy who I bought this from wanted it to look like a fender so he added a decal. I will remove it, I recived a nice gift from another friend for a Fender Texas special, prebuilt and wired scratch guard. I also made a thread about this. I will be finishing this soon. Fender SSS loaded pickguard texas special

The Bruiser, another strat I got trading some things. Great deal. I have a thread about fixing it up but it was an SSS I dropped in a HSH. Sounds good I think. The Bruiser, Black and Blue. HH turns to HSH project

I have a nice classical guitar built by the Spanish guitar maker Adilid. Unfortunately the bridge was coming off. So I am working on this on as well. I look forward to finishing it.

Johnson metal slide guitar. Probobly the nicest guitar I own. I bought this on a desert crossroad here in Arizona by an old man selling a few items. I have not spent anytime playing this yet, but soon hopefully with BLIM2 course stating in January my skills will be improved so that I can make some good music with it.

A small little Yamaha Jr for the backyard, beach, mountains or living room, where ever. Something to grab and experiment on.

Amplifiers. All suck, all given to me for free. I had to fix them to get working. So they don’t suck that bad. The 2 working are small little practice amps, the one I have been using says acoustic the other is a bass amp. Niether sound great but I am just getting into the electric thing so they will have to do. I have a 3rd but I smelled magic smoke when I plugged it in and hit the switch. I have not found the time to mess with it.

The next big purchase is guess needs to be an amplifier. I really want something with a nice tone. If I can find a nice old tube amp used, that would be fantastic.

Pedals
Vintage Distortion
Rat clone
Compressor
Chorus
A Looper

Other instruments
Trumpets. I have a few, but will note only 2. The one I am playing and using is a sweet ‘Olds Ambassador’ made in Fullerton, California 1942 or 1943. It’s a tank. I also have a Gretch stenciled that is almost 100 years old. Very unique horn, I dont have the correct sized mouthpiece for it. The compression seems ok, I belive it willsound very strong also.

I have a keyboard with MIDI. It’s old and a hand me down special but it works and there is a ton of uses for different things.

That’s about it. Oh I have a Native American flute made by a friend who is a performer and also a builder. It’s a short one but it’s neat. I don’t have any idea how to play it. Hopefully I can make use of it, in the future.

I still need a couple of Microphones, vocal and amp/acoustic.
A red box, DAW thing. I can’t wait to get stuff recorded. Lots to learn.

This whole year has been a rough one for my family, we had some really bad things happen but my guitar playing has kept me sane and has really helped me keep my head somewhat straight. I am so thankful for this. We are in a new place and I am working on setting up my music space. Still many things in storage but slowly getting it set up. There is lots to do in here obviously but its my own space.

I am sort of in-between grade 3 and grade 4, but I am consolidating 3, but have done a number of things in 4 as well.

Music theory class, I think I am at the end of grade 4 and In 5. I slowed myself down and have been trying really incorporate the theory. I dont know how well. Lol

BLIM2 course in a couple of weeks and I am looking forward to that.

I have made so many gains this year and very appreciative.

  1. I learned to play

  2. I learned well enough to uploaded my first video last week. I had some block, I didn’t feel comfortable putting it out there. But I am working on overcoming that weirdness. Those ones I did I learned from. So thumbs up. I have a tube channel now and I have been just recording everything especially when I am trying to develop my own stuff, which I am very interested in.

This is getting long so, here is my little learning video. I have been trying to work out, transcribe this song and I discovered a very cool sound.

Thank you for taking the time to take a look at my first entry. I am looking forward to keeping this updated with my learning progress, guitar successes and other interesting things of note. :notes:

Great start to your log, Jason!

An enjoyable read and it was fun to see your music space in progress.

Isn’t it amazing when you realize that you are able to transcribe something? Such a cool feeling. There was such a big feeling of satisfaction for me those first few times I was able to use my ear to figure out something on my own.

I will be looking forward to your future updates :slightly_smiling_face:
