Anyone else have the experience of getting this down pretty well within just a couple minutes? While Justin was going over this, my muscle memory figured out the pattern supe fast. I’m pretty sure I never tried playing this when I took a few months of guitar as a teen or my occasional noodling with my guitar in my 20s. I’m in my 50s and trying to learn again for the first time in 30+ years, so was just surprised, but maybe this is just a really easy pattern to figure out and memorize?
This one is fairly straight forward - part of the reason it is early in grade 1. It is on one string and you can assign a finger to each note. It is great for getting your fingers moving and on target.
Some challenges you may not be watching for:
- Can you play it accurately throughout the whole song duration?
- Can you keep the tempo consistent for the duration
- Can you hit the frets in the same place each time
- Can you pick the string at the right volume consistently
I still use this as a way to get my timing back under control on days my left and right hands don’t seem to work together.
In grade 2 or 3, I was looking at slides and added that to be more like the original. That is another challenge that is not part of the lesson. Much easier to mess up one of the items I listed trying to do the slide. 
Some of these things we learn are useful starting points for a new technique we learn later.

While you are doing all those great things sequences mentioned, you can also try to do while not looking at your fingers.
