Pink Floyd: One of These Days (cover)

I haven’t done any PF in a while, so here’s One of These Days, a fun bouncy tune from Meddle!

Awesome!! Astonishingly true to the original with the odd variations that make it your own. Everything about this production is as near perfect as possible. I can’t find words sufficient to express my admiration for this. Love it!!

Brian

Amazing production! I especially liked the slide guitar portion.

Wow - awesome work Phil!

You already know how I feel about PF, but the lasers and vocals made up for it :slight_smile:

Super stuff, Phil. Now your slide and PF remarks the previous weeks have become clearer. I really need to read between the lines of your posts as there’s clues to be found on your next AVoYPs. You should sing more often.

Just brilliant Phil, fantastic production. Real treat!

That was gorgeous, congrats!

Nice touch with the Dalek intruding in; and I had a chuckle with the laser (and half expected to see a cat jumping at the wall)

Newbie question from someone who never used a slide: when you are using it you’re not really fretting the strings, right? I mean, you’re just pressing gently on the strings so that they get “fretted” against the slide, but not press down on the frets in the fretboard? At least I got that feeling from the fact that the tone moves up and down smoothly, instead of jumping in semi-tones.

ok the laser part really made me laugh :rofl:

it was truely amazing
the slide guitar was excellent

as we say in french : “ it was honey in my ears “

Talent across multiple instruments. I love it! Hey, if I were to learn an easy Pink Floyd, what would you recommend first? I need baby steps but want to try some Floyd out!

OHHH_EMMMMM_GEEEE!

Where can I buy tickets?

Stunning Phil. What a production and perormance.

It’s probably a good thing you can only press the :heart: button once (ask me how I know) because otherwise I would have overloaded the server.
Love this!
I have aspirations to mix various instruments, but rather than ask a bunch of question, I’ll scour your profile page. I’ve watched some of past offerings but I think it was the Dalek that made me reply. If we could get them to watch this, they’d see that perfection already exists and leave us alone…

@beejay56 @TheCluelessLuthier @mathsjunky @Socio @Boris1565 @heckler @GrumpyMac @ToshS Thank you for the listen and the kind comments folks!

I thought I’d give everyone an all-expense-spared visual treat!

@heckler Yes, with slide, you have to make sure you don’t press so hard that the strings touch the fretboard. It can be tricky with light gauge strings and low action. Mine were .009-.042 on that guitar so I had to use a very light touch with the slide. If you see David Gilmour play it live, he uses a lap steel guitar which I guess has a completely different technique to play.

@GrumpyMac

Mission accomplished! I did experiment with shining the laser pointer through steam from a kettle to see if I could see the beam, but it was so weak that I couldn’t. I also thought of creating a cloud of flour and shining it through that, but the mess might have resulted in a divorce :rofl:

@mundeli @Willsie @WayneR Thanks so much guys!
@WayneR I don’t think there’s anything on my profile page Wayne! All the guitar and bass sounds are done with a Fractal FM3. The Hammond organ is a B3-X VST. Everything is mixed using the Reaper DAW.

A classic would be Wish You Were Here. Justin has a set of lessons:

Another possibility if you wanted to incorporate a classic electric solo would be “Mother”.

More wonderfulness Phil.
Your effort and skill are admirable and you provide us with so many fantastic recordings.

Touching, not pressing.

@twistor59 I notice you’re not really muting behind the slide and have some gain dialled in to the tone. How did you manage to avoid sympathetic ringing out of the strings?

I’m kinda speechless, Phil! :open_mouth:
This is, in my book, your finest project yet :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
I just rewatched Live in Pompeii (again :roll_eyes:) last weekend, followed by the director’s interview with the band, whilst remixing in a Paris Studio
I was crossing everything from the beginning, whispering to myself over and over:
“Please don’t let him screw up…”
Six and a half minutes later, I exhaled :wind_face:
I’ll ‘echo’ everything said above :wink:
My only question- how long did it take you (either months or man-hours) to put this together?
Mind blown :exploding_head:

Wow Phil, your talents are wasted on us lot!:grinning_face_with_big_eyes:
What a production and I can only imagine the time and effort you’ve put into this. To play all those different instruments and put it all together is beyond my comprehension.
Fantastic. Well done.

@Richard_close2u @brianlarsen @sairfingers Thank you for watching a video featuring my scintillating personality :rofl:

I just had a play to find out - what I do is most of the muting with the right hand somehow. I think muting behind the slide is in general a better way to do it, but in this tune there are some places where it goes way above the last fret, and trailing a finger behind doesn’t really fit. Ideally I would have a lap steel guitar, but I think “she” might notice if I smuggled one of those in.

Surprisingly, this one didn’t take as long as some of the others. Maybe a month or so in elapsed time? It took a few goes to get the slide part right without sounding too flat in some places.

For the bass part, I watched this “tutorial” from Guy Pratt (the bass player for PF live ever since Roger left)

One of These Days begins at about 3:45 (warning: contains fruity language!)

Thanks for the info. I should go back to Reaper. I’m trying Cakewalk, and I find it cluttered and, frankly, confusing. I have two Rolands (Juno synth and a ‘regular’ piano), a drum kit and various smaller instruments. So, I have enough gear - just need to make use of it.
I’ll still prowl your page to listen to older posts, and for the inspiration.
