Playing songs in lesson 1 module 2

I seem to have a hard time following the song progression in the app and have been trying to memorize the chord progression and learn three little birds that way. I get lost and out of synch trying to follow the app. Is that a common occurrence and is chord progression memorization ok?

Hello JG & Welcome!!!

I find that the app isn’t the best option for learning a song. It’s great for playing along with… I use it for guitar karaoke almost daily! It doesn’t provide any information about the song structure, key it’s in or even (in most cases) the actual strumming patterns. So, I either write down the chord progression as the song plays. Then use play/pause/play/pause & write out the lyrics… after that, I can usually sus out which parts are verse, chorus or bridge if I hadn’t already figured that out from listening… it takes some time but it helps me to “internalize” the song!!! Afterwards, the song as it plays in the app makes more sense.
Or else I get all that information elsewhere!

Good luck & keep it FUN!!!

P.S. I almost forgot, use the slider at the bottom to slow things down your first few times through!

Welcome to the forum Jason.
Chord progression memorization is the key to knowing 100s of songs. You’ll find many songs will have the same chord progressions just different timing and feel.

If you look up songs with the chords A D and E you’ll find thousands.

I tried the app for a while but never found the guitar-eoke approach helpful for me, largely for the reasons @CATMAN62 described. In contrast I found the way the information is presented in Justin’s song books as song sheets plus a write-up of details really helpful. I’d also suggest you look at @LievenDV’s presentation on memorizing songs. The concept of learning songs in layers makes a lot of sense to me and you might find it helpful.

Possibly not helpful but I do have a good time with it!

David, your post reminded me that I really need to put ar least 1 or 2 of Justin’s songbooks on my wishlist… things on that list seem to magically appear in our house from time to time!!!

I bought six of them when I returned to playing in 2020. I need to spend more time with them. But I’m happy I spent the $s and supported the site.
