PURPLE HAZE COVER By OH49 & LBro - As done by Jimi

This cover of Purple Haze started out as a play along by Oldhead49. He shared it with me and I thought it was a great start. So I said, lets make it into a project. This is the result of that work. It took many months to do, mainly due to medical issues on both ends. So it is with great relief I post this as a final rendition for you to take in. We hope you enjoy it and let us know what you think. All comments as always, are welcome.

Bravo LBro, Dave. Classic Hendrix and you did a great job. Guitar sounded fabulous.

I’d have liked the vocal a little more prominent in the mix. I guess a challenge with the fx applied and also maybe it is true to the original you were referencing.

Still great tip of the hat to the legend that is Jimi.

Dark days, chinks of light, needed that. Thanks lads you always deliver ! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Oh great job guys - you totally got the feel of the original. Was that an octave fuzz sound on the lead?

And the ol’ timers from across the pond creak out of their wheelchairs 'n hospital beds just to show the New European upstarts how rock is really done… :sign_of_the_horns: :smiling_face_with_horns: :sign_of_the_horns:
Take a bow both of you
Bravo! :bouquet:

I love this. Great job guys!

Really good one! I have been trying to get Purple Haze right for 6 months, particularly the tricky solo, I thought you got that down well. :guitar::sign_of_the_horns:

Hi David!
The mix on the vox is tricky due to the way Jimi sang. He would use volume level a great deal to emphasize words and mood. I was not able to do that and was more even. Thus, to get his level one has to pick what to go after. If I focused on his loudest parts and leveled my vox to that, then I am too loud. I kind of went for a happy medium. To me it is more about the guitar and we had a very good time of it with OH in there!

I figure since Jimi was a local, home grown boy and talent, we had to try and do our best, if for no one else, but him!

Take good care!

Hi Toby,

Hi there Twistor!’
Thanks so much for you kind words! I think OH really nailed the opening as it sounded spot on to my ears there. The rest is great too, but that into tone wise and playing are right there.

I will let @oldhead49 explain how he got his tones on this one. Jimi’s tone is tough as he employed modified, custom equipment and was a maniac of a player…

Take care!

Ha,
The English Chap’s words of wisdom aplenty on this one. Funny you should mention wheelchair as I have one right next to me. I destroyed my foot and now the wife is wheeling me around. Not pretty.

You lads seem to have had your fair share of acts go through town and originate somewhere over there. But there is only one Hendrix… the master of guitar. I can’t think of many others that play as well with their teeth. I tried to get OH to do that, but his dental work is not so good… :upside_down_face:

Be well and play our tune for the Inn guests so they get a dose of something good!

I figured so, LBro, and make no mistake in my observation . . . I think you did a great job and delivered a rocking version.

You and I often have this debate about adherance to the original reference. No right or wrong, the way you strive to reproduce the original as close as possible is exceptional. For my taste I’d start there and then not worry if you stray a bit to give the overall production a little of your own production values.

David,

I thought about trying to level up each word to match his level. I did do a lot of word leveling, but not with that goal. Problem is he combined level variation with for example an ending to where he got louder to make a point and key on that end word. When I came along and tried to duplicate that, I could get the volume level right, but in so doing it did not sound like him due to his combination of all involved. It is a bit hard to put into words!

While we are at it, he sings choppy with short duration words. Then, they put on a lot of delay. I had a hard time figuring out where he left off and the delay started. Many would say Jimi was not much of a vocalist, but what he did was harder to mimic than most would imagine…

Be well!

I do admire the depths you go to listening to the original, hearing all the nuances, and doing your best to replicate.

If it were me, I’d have sung the vocal as best as I could and then just leveled and applied the delay (I though reverb maybe as well) to my own taste.

You do an inspirational job with the level of detail you put into the production.

And should also note the superb guitar work of @oldhead49 who delivers great tone and play!

I shall resist this bait!
And although Jimi was American, he did have to come to England to be appreciated

@LBro @oldhead49
Once again the pair of you have produced a bit of a masterpiece! I can only imagine the time and effort that has gone into this piece.
Is it exactly like the original? Perhaps not. Does it need to be? No. If I wanted to listen to the original then I’d do just that. I’d much rather listen to you guys’ excellent playing/singing/production.
Well done.

Ha, Jimi knew you folks over were not “experienced”. So he put his act on the road and invaded Europe. It was after that the light was seen by the lads over there. It is telling 3 of his top songs were left off the UK album version! But, those tracks were on the US album!

Then, Jimi got pissed as he was told he played too loud…

He was playing a Marshall twin stack, and it was so loud in the studio that we (Chandler) were picking up various rattles and noises. "According to Chandler, Hendrix then threatened to leave England, stating: “If I can’t play as loud as I want, I might as well go back to New York.” - Tells me Jimi knew his roots and the poor chaps over there had their ears hurt… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Of course Hendrix was from here and played both near my dad’s home and more so down a bit south of Seattle. His dad lived here long after Jimi died and may still today. But I am not sure if he is still with us. At any rate, nice try on attempting to portray Jimi as “found by the Bits”! The reality is, no Seattle and no Jimi… His museum is here as is his grave and both are testament to his greatness here.

There you have it mate,
