Rain (and autumn) songs

What a Saturday. It’s raining. Looks as if November is just around the corner. A flock of clever birds already seems to have started its journey South weeks ago…

And then I saw @roger_holland earlier proclaiming today to be the last day of meterological summer…

I guess… Reasons good enough as any to collect rain (and autumn) songs :cloud_with_rain:

Let me start with this rather obvious one.

And the open line of their Ramble On !

Hi Nicole ,
I woke up this morning with a song in my head (always almost every morning with a song or part of something new, etc.) that I actually wanted to post in my Spring/Summer songs to end this period,
It is a song that has almost brought me to tears for several decades now, and it is usually played around the 20th of September … A very famous Dutchman who is an actor/caberatier and when this song became a hit there were several of his colleagues who gave him the cold shoulder (They thought it was commercial shit)(snobs they where )

Because not many people will read and listen carefully, I won’t put too much effort into checking the text and will simply throw it through the translation machine…

't Is weer voorbij die mooie zomer
Liedje van Gerard Cox
( It’s Over That Beautiful Summer Again)

Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na

You’ve been looking forward to it for months
The cold winter didn’t want to end at first
Slowly and slowly the weeks crept along
But finally there it was the sun
The nights are short and the days are long
The morning full of birdsong
The sharp high buzzing of a mosquito
Then you think, there it is
This will be at least a summer of a century
But dear people, oh how quickly it goes
That beautiful summer is over again
That summer that started almost in May
Ah you thought it couldn’t end
But before you know it, the whole summer will be long gone
The world was then full of light and life
Of herring smell mixed with sunscreen
A parasol to sift the bright light
And the sand rubbed softly in your clothes
We played golf and bocce
We sat blissfully in a chair
We floated on the river in a raft
We were spoiled for weeks
But hey, everything comes to an end
Now I’m sitting here in the rain with my slides
That beautiful summer is over again
That summer that started almost in May
Ah you thought it couldn’t end
But before you know it, the whole summer will be long gone
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na
Autumn slowly changes color all the trees again
I’ve long since put my pajamas back on at night
Then you should have come in July
Then we slept outside on the beach at night
And fishing in the sun in the morning
And swim as far as you could
We sailed out to sea in a boat
It’s a shame it ended
It’s all memory
We’ll do it again all winter long
That beautiful summer is over again
That summer that started almost in May
Ah you thought it couldn’t end
But before you know it, the whole summer will be long gone

Edit:
Forgot the song
Oh for those in the know, I found a special version with one of the best orchestras in the world

There is quite a lot of rain and autumn there in the song after that as well :fallen_leaf:

@roger_holland Love it. Beautiful lyrics. What’s the orchestra?

@Boris1565 I had totally forgotten about this song…

I could add a whole list of rain songs :joy:, just three of them for now:
By the way: we are still sweating here with temperatures around 30 degrees .

Made me immediately think of this: The mighty Groundhogs, A Year in The Life 1971

We’ve had plenty rain up here this Summer! Here’s some from the early 70s.

Didn’t know this song @sairfingers … hmm, very kitschy and very beautiful rain :umbrella:

@rorystrat Never heard of the Groundhogs… Will check. Hmm, now I want to have some hot chocolate and to watch “Groundhog day”…

Hmmm… @Helen0609 … I can offer 14C. And of course it just started doing this again…

Great picks! I remember buying the single (my first) of Rainy Days and Mondays. Within a few years I’d gotten too cool for that kind of music (I was into Three Dog Night by then, yikes!). Lately though, I can appreciate Karen Carpenter again, I think, after all these years.

Groundhogs with Tony (TS) McPhee on guitar. Very underrated. Saw them in Neumuenster in 1972 along with Chicken Shack (Stan Webb) and Steamhammer (Martin Pugh). I saw Chicken Shack again a few years ago on the same bill as John Mayall with Mick Taylor on guitar.

I love these threads. Rain is a popular topic for songwriters! Here are a few that come to mind:

The Beatles: Rain
CCR: Have you ever seen the rain, Who’ll stop the rain
James Taylor: Fire and rain
Buddy Holly: Raining in my heart
Grateful Dead: Box of rain
Bob Dylan: A hard rain’s a’gonna fall
Prince: Purple rain

However, I want to post a song by the late, great Pino Daniele, a very famous Italian singer, guitarist, songwriter, etc. I can’t understand the lyrics: they are not Italian, but rather in Naples dialect. However, I think I can still understand the song, if that makes any sense.

What a list. Glad to know that the horrible weather here today is good for something at least :sun_behind_rain_cloud:

Can’t resist posting one of the best covers of Dylan’s rain song…

Thank you so much for sharing. I clicked your link … Oh, wow. That sax. Marvellous. And Gregory Porter. New discovery for me, unbelievable voice.

Definitely going to listen resp. watch the whole video within the next days :slightly_smiling_face:

Aah… Difficult listening to that one without comparing to a glorious community open mic performance from Jenn @Jenndye429 and Dan :slightly_smiling_face:

Hope the Swedish summer is (has been) a bit better than the Finnish one. We have had way too many happy (rainy) days :umbrella:

Oh, I missed that one. Are the open mic sessions recorded?

Summer’s been pretty nice here as I recall (according to Swedish an Finnish standard anyway).

And of course Christine McVie (then Christine Perfect) sang with Chicken Shack before joining Fleetwood Mac. Small world!
