Reflecting on a Misstep: An Apology and Explanation

There has been a JustinGuitar ā€˜forum’ for many, many years. LievenDV has been a constant, a moderator from the beginning. I became a moderator in the early days too.
This Community was created in testing mode on 01 December 2021 and went public on 01 January 2022 with a full migration from the old forum. That is a total of 1588 days.
In that time I have been present and active in the Community on all but eleven days. Three of those were in the first month when the Community was still a private test space. That means I have missed just eight days in the four years and three months since it went public. Those days of ā€˜absence’ are detailed below.

December 2021 to April 2026 - Complete summary of all ā€˜absent’ dates:

Year Dates
2021 December 3, December 7, December 13
2022 November 24
2023 May 26, June 14, October 27
2024 February 22, April 11, June 13
2025 June 19
2026 None

Come rain, shine, holiday, illness or other, I visit the Community to keep up with the questions, issues and conversations, to respond and help as much as I can and to moderate where it may be needed.
During that time I have read more than 168,000 posts (averaging about 100 per day) in over 14,000 topics and written over 9,500 posts myself (averaging over 6 per day). I have made thousands of moderator ā€˜interventions’.

As a community member, have I ever posted something frivolous or pointless, have I ever joined in with silly conversations or responded with levity and emojis? Yes, of course I have. I want to enjoy myself here just as much as anyone.

As an admin / moderator - as with all admins and moderators - my remit is to oversee the Community in a way that helps to ensure it runs according to some very simple and reasonable guidelines that Justin expects, in parallel with the philosophy and ethos of his business model. Most of these can be encapsulated in a few simple phrases - be positive and pay-it-forward.
:+1:
In that role, have I ever made a misstep when moderating or making actions decisions?
:man_shrugging:
Yes, very probably. In fact the chances are high indeed - who is perfect and never makes a mistake or a decision they come to have second thoughts about in retrospect?

I undoubtedly made such a lapse last week. And it caused some friction and dissatisfaction among several members. There were no major breaches of our ā€˜rules’ as we do not have explicit guidelines concerning the use of polls or the quantity of new topics a user may make. I was responding negatively to what I saw as a flood. In hindsight, my reaction did not warrant a community-wide admin announcement. For my error in judgement and the upset caused - directly to those members whose posts prompted my comment and indirectly to those unhappy with the moderation - I apologise. I messed up, plain and simple.
:man_bowing:
:pensive:

I value this community and the people in it far too much to let a lapse in judgement cloud the great work we do here together. My goal remains the same: to keep this a supportive, positive space for every guitar player, regardless of where they are on their journey.

Richard - I for one don’t think you need to apologise. However, over the years I have ā€˜known’ you it’s clear that you set yourself exceptionally high standards, so although in my opinion unnecessary, I’m not surprised to see this post - just another example of those standards, humility and caring attitude you display every day.
Your work on this site is so very much appreciated by so many.

Does Justin know about this?
You don’t even provide reasons for your absences, which I frankly think it taking the proverbial…

Well maybe not ā€˜perfect’, but I’m pretty close to a gold standard as you can get

Bull! :face_with_monocle:
The ā€˜lapse’ was folk piling in, adding their own take on what was perhaps an unnecessary, but definitely reasonable observation/request.
Mountains and molehills.
Nothing to see here, folk.
Move along now…

Unnecessary apology accepted. Please don’t lose any sleep over any of it. My perspective is I always try to give a lot of leeway to the moderators of any group I’m involved with and in the case of the Justin forums, I find them to be overwhelmingly encouraging and positive.

I did see a post recently that to me seemed a bit harsh (not from you) and was tempted briefly to call out the poster on it, but then thought better given such things are so very rare here.

Keep smiling and keep doing the great work you do on these forums. I consider them to be a ā€œsafe placeā€ for me and much of that is thanks to your efforts

Hi Richard
You already indicated that it clearly bothered you in that other topic… that was more than necessary as far as I was concerned…
I hope it really doesn’t bother you anymore. It should be clear what I think about you…

Paul you read my mind, with much better words, and I see no need to add anything else from my part.

Hi Richard, I would have never made my initial comment to your post had I known how the subsequent conversation will unfold. It is definitely not what I wanted and I am sorry for that - espacially for the cheeky language I used.

With the hindsight and in light of the posts in the past few days, I realised the moderation was necessary. I think you are doing a great job and I am very grateful for that.

Richard

Your input in this community is unfailingly supportive and helpful. No misstep seen. That’s a ten from all the judges!!

Brian

Dedicated, humble, compassionate, caring person that Richard is.

Justin Community would be diminished without your presence Richard.
And the World Community is a better place too (we need more Richard-likes now)

It is good to have a plurality of considered opinions.
Monolithic, unchanging thought is blinding and dangerous.
Compassion is vital

Thank you, thank you, thank you Richard for being you :confetti_ball:
Bruce

Did you make an error? Where? How? Why? Never seen that, afaik.
It’s a moderators job to sometimes do the dirty work too.
If that upsets some people… well, that’s life.

Keep on doing what you’ve been doing all along. Which is a splendid job! Don’t change an inch.

Thank you for all your hard work. Happily looking forward to more years!!

When the announcement came out last week. I did think it was excessive and I almost messaged to say I thought it was overreach. I get it, there was a lot, but also I thought it was fun engagement of the community.

I appreciate the effort to rectify the issue, but I also think it was relatively minor infraction that did not really require an apology, but simply a clarification, which I think was accomplished here.

All said, thanks for making a great, positive, encouraging community!

Aww Richard, you are good. I appreciate you and your hard work. I also appreciate a well moderated site.

No need to apologize.

Can we make a poll to ask if Richard needed to apologize or not ?

Now… It seems like I missed some action… What happened?

Honestly Richard, you’re input, assistance, advice and moderating of this site is second to none. No one would expect perfection even though it appear Brian is pretty close

You and in fact all of the core people in this community should feel very proud of what we have and be commended.

It is also important that people in your position here dont overdo it and get burnt out, a bit of time out is always necassary to
recharge.

We have a great community, lets just keep it
that way :+1:
