Rock Ballad in B (original)

It’s May - time for a new original song. I called it a ‘rock ballad’, even though “it ain’t what they call rock’n’roll”. I recorded the rhythm and the chord progression, then - as usual - improvised the solo. The tune (unlike my mood recently) is fairly cheerful, I hope you’ll like it.

I played on my latest P-90s-equipped ‘black beauty’. Amp/cab modelling and all the effects from a ZOOM G2 Four multi-effect.

That’s nice, very cheerful and just what I needed this dismissal afternoon here in the UK

Well played: your improvised solo has a very good shape to it, fitting well with the backing track. Like a wordless song with your lead guitar singing the melody. Really enjoyed it.

@DarrellW @beejay56 @DavidP @twistor59 @Bytron08 Thanks, guys, as usual you’ve made my day with your positive opinions. For a complete amateur like myself signs of appreciation are something of a great value.
@twistor59: It’s a long story about those improv skills you so kindly mentioned. Years ago the way I played at home was mostly noodling. Then, some ten years ago, I discovered a sweet little device called looper… That changed everything. I started recording chord progressions and tried to play solo lines over them. The progressions were gradually becoming more complex or just more interesting, but soloing was always the greatest fun…
Thank you all so much once again.

Coda, another great and relaxing tune. I could listen to this one time and time again. Thanks for sharing. Jim

Jim - thank you for listening and the kind words in your comment. Much appreciated.

Very nice. The lead lines are really interesting. A minor comment on the mix: there’s a lot of delay on the lead guitar so maybe a bit less delay / reverb on the backing track might help it stand out a bit more in a good way. I’ll have to check out more of your work.

You are welcome, of course, but I’m afraid you may be disappointed, as I really like the rev/del effects, and I tend to overdo every now and then . It has been pointed out also by other members who listened to my recordings.
Anyway, first of all I should thank you for listening and for your remark regarding the mix, something I should perhaps pay more attention to.

No worries. I don’t object to filling up space & time. My suggestion was just an idea to try on the material at hand. I’ve actually been thinking that I should spend more time with my Katana experimenting with delay and chorus for some sounds with more space to them.

Wow…just wow! I so admire who can improvise! It seems just a distant and wonderland world to my eyes. Sounding great, both cheerful and relaxing. Congratulations!!

This is cool man, nice work. Quite upbeat which makes a change from all the blues I normally listen to… but I did hear some bluesy touches here and there!

One thing I noticed was the lead playing sometimes was overpowered by the rhythm section. Ive found that panning the rhythm track one way and the lead track the other way, even just half panning, helps to seperate them. Also cutting some of the high frequencies from the rhythm stuff can help too.

Look forward to more of your work!

@Silvia80 @Enky08 Thank you both for listening; glad you liked it.
Neil - you’ll probably right saying that the lead line was at times overpowered by the rhythm section; I’ve already encountered such remarks in the comments to my recordings. However, the possible audible excess of high frequencies in the rhythm track largely depends on the type of audio equipment used for playing the song. Anyway, thanks a lot, I treat all comments seriously.
