Sharing a recording of ‘Losing my religion’ by R.E.M

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this recording :slightly_smiling_face:
I watched justin Sandercoe’s tutorial on ‘Losing My Religion’ where he mentions at the end that he would like us to share our cover of this song

Hi Laurent, and welcome.
That was excellent. I really enjoyed the guitar playing with all the little melody notes and bass lines. Very well done, and very nice groove.
The singing was very good, too.
I don’t know if you are looking for feedback on the recording itself, too, but here are a few thing that came to my mind:
This setup - using the internal pickup in the guitar and singing into a dynamic microphone held close to the mouth - gives it a very “live performance” sound and feel.
If you want a more “studio recording” sound, I think mic’ing up the guitar and singing with a bit more distance to the microphone could make a difference.

Excellent rendition of a great song. I liked the ‘live’ nature of the recording: the guitar accompaniment was well played and the sound balanced well with the singer. Enjoyed it.

Real good!
I enjoyed that.
I wouldn’t change anything about that at all.

Can you describe how you folks recorded that.
It appears that vocal mic and guitar are plugged into a mixer, then off to the speakers behind you (I assume)?
How are ya recording it? Via live mic that we can see? or mixer to daw? or is there a interface in there somewhere in the recording chain?
However ya recorded it. It came out good and with good balance between vocal and guitar. The guitar tones came across real well too. Looks like a real nice guitar ya got there too.
I’m down with the individual notes mixed into the guitar part too. It’s how I try to play too. (least I think it is)

A fun Rendition!
Thanks for sharing!

Enjoyed this, guitar really gets the REM groove, and nice singing.
Just suggested to my wife that she might like to join me on an AVOYP but she firmly declined!

Lovely rendition, both guitar and vocal, Laurent. You appear to be quite accomplished musicians. I suggest you provide a little more context that would shape thoughts. You can also introduce yourself to the Community by posting an intro here Introduce yourself ... Share some guitar history, personal history and musical aspirations as a student of Justin.

Hello,

We recorded ourselves using the Sony HDR MV1 and we plugged my guitar and vocal :microphone: into the mixer to :loud_sound:.

This may not be the best set up, but it allows us to do a recording quickly. And we can use it as a template to improve on.

There’s a set up which I find really interesting, but it’s not available yet in Europe. It is the Audigo microphone. It is a condenser microphone that you connect to your mobile phone via Bluetooth. I find that to be very interesting and with a lot of potential.

Thank you very much for your kind comments on our playing.

Take care

Great stuff, with passing notes and a good groove.

This is actually an easy song …to mess up
…so great job on both of you!

You guys kept it interesting which isn’t as easy as it sounds; I heard a lot of “boring” versions in my life already (not refering to anything on the Community specifically ;))

just a tad of reverb on the both of you wold liven it up even more I reckon

Thanks for the helpful comment.

I found out recently that their is reverb built in to the mixing console which is a Mackie Profx16V2. So, we should be able to add a touch of reverb on guitar and vocals :slightly_smiling_face:.

Adding base and licks here and there made it interesting to play for me and hopefully the listener feels that as well. I pay attention to dynamics now more than before.

Take care

Thanks for sharing!
I really like your arrangement…you get the best of the mandolin and bass parts integrated and some percussive strumming as well. I also really liked the solo (2.43) with the rhythm integrated.

I agree with @LievenDV that this song can be boring (especially when reduced to 1 instrument) and yours is definitely not!

Very timely as I’ve been experimenting with this one myself.
Thank you!

Thank you For the kind comments -

I made a conscious effort on this recording to vary the dynamics so as to keep it interesting.

As well as incorporating the solo and the riffs as well.

As you mentioned, it makes it more interesting as a solo guitarist as It can get boring if you don’t Make the variations.
