Silvia's Learning Log

Thank you Rogier, I’m really glad you find my updates some fun

Thank you so much Withold for your kind encouraging words, this thing was putting my patience at test but now I’m working on it with renewed energy and today I could make it progress nicely!

…just the past month Toby!

I’m so sorry to read about your struggles, they are about health issues in the family if I’m correct…it brings some tears to my eyes to know that my updates brought some joy to you.

Remember that picture with my dad I posted a while ago?..we really are the same, if the world falls down we just move a bit on the side…someone might think we’re selfish but the truth is that the world is not falling down, and if it were really what can I do with just a pair of weak arms? But then the people who feel they’re falling down, it seems like they read on our face that, no the world is not falling down after all and feel lifted up a bit…so…yes I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and find my little joys of the now and here, because the future is too scary to think about.
Now I’ve added the unnecessary

Thank you. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I was hypnotized by the movement of your fretting hand. It really looks like all your practice paid off — you’ve gained some serious finger independence. :exploding_head:

Oh Silvia, every time I watch you play I tell myself I need to go practice a lot more. Thanks for the motivation.

 thank you Mathieu!

That’s exactly what I tell myself when I see myself playing :rofl::rofl:

Did you go to practice then? :face_with_monocle::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

It’s not actually about the quantity of time you put in, but more the quality of it and consistency; I try to find 1 hour a day - 5 days a week for practice/playing…those days break are really helpful to me, better than if I were practicing.

Ok now break is over, 10 focused minutes more with the metronome before I start working.

haha! But I have the same point of view as Michael, tons of respect for your renditions! When I fingerpick, most of it are repetitive patterns, so what you do seems quite a bit more difficult!

Hmm… Too short a video maybe… I like hearing you sing so much :face_blowing_a_kiss:

How does the Bravo-song continue?

Thanks for the encouragment Domi, it’s much appreciated :hugs:

Thanks Nicole :hugs:

I worked out a couple of bars simple ending after the first chorus, because it’s proving to be more challenging than expected - it was a bit silly of me to start it at all, especially that I wasn’t able to feel the Rhythm and I was convinced it was in 12/8.

Edit: I will add that I probably should be humblier at this point learn ready made arrangements with lesson, it would save me a lot of trouble.

Silvia… Would you enjoy that, honestly? I think, how you are taking on things is a wonderful way to learn. Will everything always work fine and sound like you would really want it to sound? Maybe not. Yet: Do you enjoy what you are doing? And isn’t that what is most important?

DECEMBER UPDATE

I’m in bed with a flu :face_with_thermometer::sneezing_face: and I thought I’d do an early update this month.

Wish you were here
It was really great to join the party, I loved to see so many of us engaged with this tune and I believe watching eachother performance helped us to know eachother a bit better. Learning Level 1 has been very much useful to me and I really loved it.

The Christmas Party and “practicing the amp”
Ohi ohi I use the Amp only for the school parties, I never had a problem with it or maybe I just wasn’t aware of it. This time it caused much trouble and frustration. With some practice the result at the party was decent enough. But I believe there might be s technical problem, beyond me being very much innacurate with my technique.

And while you know I love sharing, and since I much irritated my own ears through this damn little thing amplifying every single innacurracy of my hands…well why not irritating your ears as well? :joy:
Don’t use headphones!

If anyone ever wonders…that was holy exclamation, no rude swearing really :innocent:

And last but not least Sarà Natale se…while re-listening to this I oncemore feel like I’m in a stage of my journey where I need to aim to more accuracy… so much for me to work on in 2026!

Ahhh…not last! :drum: rolling drums…I’ve finally started learning Dee!! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Only four days insofar, as there was the party and the flu right the day after. I’m keeping a diary, which is hugely helpful and I will share it

Oh dear, get well soon!
We already knew the last video, but I just listened to the second video with my daughter. Very well played and sung. It’s so funny how you react to the amp  And my daughter always enjoys hearing beautiful Italian. Merry Christmas.

Sylvia, the practice clips from “ Ma che freddo fa” sound very nice. I wasn’t familiar with the song and had to listen on YouTube. Perhaps when you master this, you should add Tambourine offbeats to your song via DAW software  I’m just making a joke. I look forward to hearing the final song cover.

Can’t I just play my guitar?! :fearful: the Amp is already too much , I’ll leave the software for others :joy:

Thank you everyone for having a laugh with me at my incompetence at …?!..“sound”

First of all: Get well, soon. Super soon and quick recovery for you, so you can enjoy Christmas time to the fullest. :four_leaf_clover:

Another time, I enjoyed your take on WYWH. So well played.

I did and am still alive. It was not too bad. But using an Amp makes us really aware of the things we should mute.

I love the fact, that pretty much every language uses this kind of holy summoning.

The Christmas songs in your Amp and this final peace were so, so lovely. Your singing is always most enjoyable, and in Italian :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:… I am melting away and am in Christmas mood, now. Grazie mille!

Have a very merry Christmas, Silvia! :christmas_tree:

Thank you for posting your update, I enjoy reading them and your videos. I had a bit of a giggle with the second one.
I may have used some kind of holy summoning when I was trying to record a guitar Christmas video. It sounds so much nicer in Italian! :joy:
Merry Christmas :sparkles: :christmas_tree:

:grin:2026 GUITAR GOALS:grin:

  1. DEVELOP MY EAR
  2. CONSOLIDATE MY REPERTOIRE
  3. IMPROVE TECHNIQUES
  4. FOLLOW THE PATH ON THE JG INTERMEDIATE METHOD BOOK
  5. BEING ABLE TO USE AN AMP EFFECTIVELY

DEVELOP MY EAR

→ HOW: I’ll resume in January with all the good exercises I invented by myself and keep on in February with a more methodical approach using the book L’orecchio Tonale (The Tonal Ear) which is adopted by many italian Conservatories for Jazz, Popular and Classical Music.

→ WHEN: Mondays and Tuesdays 7.15 – 7.45pm, all year and probably more

→ THOUGHTS: It’ ll be challenging, I’ll have to perserve and just follow the progress I’ll be able to make – no goals or deadlines , just being able to do the exercises; there are video lessons on YT on how to do the exercises, in case what is written on the book is not clear enough…I’m able to read after all.

CONSOLIDATE MY REPERTOIRE

→ HOW: distiguishing and making lists of songs/pieces I want to be able to play anywhere/anytime there’s a guitar available, for my ownself enjoyment or because someone else asks “play something/let’s sing something”.

  • Baby one more time – B. Spears
  • Wind of change – The Scorpions
  • Moonlight shadow – M. Oldfield
  • For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow

➢ Children Songs

  • The list is too long here, I can play really many short or longer tunes now, that are all tidily printed out and collected in 3 different Songs Books (italian nursery rhymes and songs/english nursery rhymes/christmas and parties longer songs); most of them I play both on the
guitar and on the Ukulele, usually keeping the musicsheet as reference – what to keep in mind here in order to improve my musicianship is to keep on trying to play from memory; I actually have e strategy which I apply already – in the meanwhile I should be supposed to look after the class as well (no emoji allowed in this document).

→ WHEN:
Classical Pieces, Chord Melodies: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays afternoons

Sing-along Songs: Mondays afternoons, Wednesdays and Thursdays mornings, Fridays morning or at 13.00

Children Songs: anytime it’s singing time with the children – Wednesdays and Thursdays afternoon at 3.15pm will make 2 perfect 15 minutes singing sessions with the Acoustic Guitar, after tiding and while we wait for the Schoolbus.

→ THOUGHTS:

  • I need to make a new Practice Routines Chart where it’s clear what I practice/when.- I think I don’t need to go much deep in the description of my items of practice: I’m able to identify my needs relatevely to the songs/pieces, and just practice according to them.
  • I might introduce some more structure if I see I’m wandering and nevertheless I can use a timer whenever I need it (which is often the case).
  • I have in my mind how I prioritize the songs and pieces in the list – just a few of them will be learnt from scratch.
  • I need to keep in mind to always make my simplified arrangement of the sing-along songs and keep the original recordings just as reference.
  • I need to keep in mind which song is Campfire and which is Developer – I will add layers through the years – there are no Dreamers at the moment in the list…while I dream to be able to sing them all properly!
  • I need to keep in mind not to start learning new techniques, but keep on improving or consolidates those I already have under my belt (apart from the 16th notes strumming, on which I have to work methodically.

IMPROVE TECHNIQUES

→ HOW: Through songs and pieces – while revisiting a song/piece I need to observe my hands, listen with my ears and identify the technical aspects that need improvement, write them down and choose a single one to work on.

→ WHEN: every single practice session.

→ THOUGHTS: I need to work a lot on the fretting hand, especially on the accuracy of changes and the position of the fingers on the fretboard when I play melodies. For the right hand I need to keep on refining the fingers strumming techniques and the muted hit; the fingerpicking is good enough at the moment compared to the other skills, the time will come when I’ll feel the need to refine it as well, it’s not a priority now.

FOLLOW THE PATH ON THE JG INTERMEDIATE METHOD BOOK

→ HOW: I still need to plan all this

→ WHEN: I might start later, say June or even July

→ THOUGHTS: on one hand I know I still have Beginner holes, especially with timing and accuracy of chords, on the other hand I can already play a few barre chords and relatively to fingerpicking I’m appronching more intermediate things, I learnt the Steady Thumb Blues which is grade 4 and I’m now approching Dee at Grade 5 having a clear idea on how to approach it. Also I
need to methodically work on the 16th notes strumming because I need it for loads of songs and I know I’m still much “wild” with it. I think June might be a good time to start off with the
Intermediate Method. I still have 6 months to improve my Beginner skills; plus I love having a book as reference for my path.

BEING ABLE TO USE AN AMP EFFECTIVELY

→ HOW: I will call the Liuther in January as there is certainly something which is not working well, either on the guitar amplification system or on the little cheap Amp I use for the school parties; there’s a general problem with the volume, but also the E bass string is much louder than the other strings. I only use the amp for the two parties, in December and in June; I need to practice more with the amp.

→ WHEN: I’m planning to do my regular practice but adding the Amp 4 months/year: April and May and November and December.

→ THOUGHTS: I think practicing with the Amp might also help me to be more accurate on the guitar. This can change if I see I become an Amp and effects enthusiast…mmm? I’d love to try out a looper too. One thing at the time.
