I first learned the guitar 50 years ago when I was in the military stationed in Alaska.
My buddy played and he taught me the basics. I bought a 12-string acoustic off another friend, got some song books and went into seclusion until I could play well enough to not thoroughly embarrass myself. I continued to play for a few years after I left the military then I stepped away from it for a number of years. Now that I’m retired, I’ve decided to pick it up again. I even bought myself a new Strat.
