The Boys of Barr na Sraide

Hello everyone,

It’s been a while since posting anything although I’ve been watching from afar. Life can get sticky as everyone knows.

Anyway, something I did yesterday remembering my Dad. A song written by a relation of mine remembering his childhood comrades and his love for his homeland in county Kerry, Ireland. Kerry played in the Gaelic Football final yesterday and beat Donegal, the highlight in Ireland’s annual national games. My Dad was a lifetime supporter and would have been there had be been around. He was looking down from above I’m sure.

Barr na Sraide translates to Top Street where the author and his friends hailed from in their youth. The town itself is wedged firmly between islands highest mountains and the Atlantic Ocean which provides a dramatic backdrop to anyone’s childhood.

I’m heading back to the Auld Sod in less than a fortnight and this is making me right nostalgic, Dom.
Excellent stuff!
I’m hearing a softer version of The Dubliners’ Skibereen or The Pogues’ And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda
Bravo! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Dom

Quietly haunting, well played and well sung. Adding to the other comparisons, echoes of Declan O’Rourke.

That was a lovely song performed well Dom. The song suited your reflections on your dad and your performance showed your emotional connection to it.

Thanks Brian. I couldn’t aspire to approach even an echo of the gifts bestowed upon Mr O Rourke but I appreciate the sentiment. If you are a fan of DOR, you might enjoy Mick Flannery. Quite the catalogue of songs and interesting lyrics.

Most appreciated John. Thank you

Really enjoyed the playing and the singing. I like the style/genre of the song. Reminded me of Gordon Lightfoot. Hard for me, as a Texas girl with that Southern accent, to understand the lyrics, but I could tell it was a lovely, well done song.

Thanks so much for sharing that beautiful song. I spent a fair amount of time in an Irish pub years back, and with my Irish heritage I loved the songs being sung and hearing all of the stories people from Ireland would share from time to time. It brought back memories. I nearly cried remembering it all. Your playing and singing are most admirable.

Beautifully sung and played Dom. Full of passion and sensitivity. Worthy of being played live in any Irish (or indeed any) pub. Well done.
