Times Gone By - Original - Alykat & CD02

Hi All,

Well, where to start. This could have gone into Originals however, more importantly it was a Collaboration, my first :scream:.

I will try to keep this brief (doubt I can tho’). I have been keen to be involved in one of these for some time but really wanted my skill level to be better as to offer more overall. But, a strange thing happened.

I was sat in our Porch on a quite windless arvo, looking across our view and was taken by thoughts that became words that became a full page of a story. The story sounded like they would make a good song so I had to throw my hat in the ring and reach out to Alykat for some help.

Thank you Alykat for everything you have done to help this into something worth listening to. It was great to work on and I think we did ok  (considering you were working with a beginner )

To keep it short the rundown is as follows:

Chord progressions/Melody Arrangement - Craig
Rhythm Gtr 1 & 2 - Craig (Taylor GA & Yamaha Dready)
Rhythm Gtr 3 - Alykat
Bass - Alykat
Acoustic Picking 1 - Craig (Yamaha Dready)
Acoustic Picking 2 - Alykat
Lead Gtr - Alykat
Percussion - Aly from Internet
Strings - Alykat
Lyrics - Alykat/Craig
Lead Vocal - Craig
Harmonies - Alykat
Mixing - Alykat

I don’t think I have missed anything, @AlyKat please feel free to jump in if I have. :ok_hand:

No video for this sorry, but the sound was the most important thing.

LYRICS:
Verse 1:
All the sounds we used to hear
When the winds came from the west
Rushing quickly thru the trees
While the sands remained at rest
It always brought a smile
That we all could understand
All the beauty of this place
And the people of this land

Verse 2:
Now the land stands still & mute
But its beauty still remains
Silence is the season
When the tears fall down like rain
Sounds are gone & in their place
Is the lull that comes at dawn
And the people of the land
Have all turned away & gone

Chorus:
The corporations they all promised
That they would bring our people back
The words were hollow & lifeless
And our hopes & dreams
They all went black

Verse 3:

Looking back on all those times
And the sadness that we feel
Comes from knowing that the land
Is the thing that makes us heal
Though the noise is gone for good
Lonely wind & trees still sway
And all the people of this land
Won’t be coming back some day

Verse 4:
Now the land is full of grace
But it changed along the way
And the people changed as well
Even though they couldn’t stay
When the years go by so quick
With each setting of the sun
Every morning tells us
That the corporations won

Chorus:
The corporations they all promised
That they would bring our people back
The words were hollow & lifeless
And our hopes & dreams
They all went black

We are the people, the people of this land.

Wow! Very, very tasty… Perfect arrangement, great instrumentation, and the harmonizing of voices is a true gem. I’m going to listen to it often… :+1: :guitar:

Lovely song, congratulations guys. So many layers, but very well put together! The melody and chord progression in the beginning reminds me of slowed down version of “Whats up” song by 4 non blondes. Especially that one short melodic line just before the chord change.

Craig, you and Allison have outdone yourselves on this one.
I honestly can’t believe the trajectory you are on (and suspect you might be a bit in awe of what you have just produced) :open_mouth:
It’s a good song :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
Not a good song for someone learning and getting to grips with playing guitar and recording-
It’s simply a GOOD SONG!
I’m loving watching your progress, and @AlyKat, you are becoming one of the ‘go to’ folk on the forum for collabs. Thank you! So inspiring for those who work with you, as well as those thinking of engaging in such a rewarding process.
Craig, at some stage your bubble is going to burst, as you can’t keep progressing at this rate, but until that time, take a bow, and another, and…

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot ‘the niggles’…
How many times do I have to tell folk round here that if you go to the trouble of writing and singing lyrics, you should share them with the punters trying to appreciate your song. (You can always use the ‘hide’ function if you want)
Also, and this is personal preference, I do enjoy visuals with my music. Even a hastily assembled slide show enhances it for me, but they can be huge fun and creatively satisfying to produce

Craig,
I was thinking about your first original song every now and then since we met a few times here on the subject in this forum.
Now I didn’t expect you to start going through the roof with your first song being AS wonderful as it is! Bravo

And you both did such a great job together, I absolutely love your harmony vocals, Aly!
And it’s great you helped one more person “blooming” :hyacinth:

Yes, me too, as non native speaker, I’d like to read the lyrics - although it’s all very clear and easy to understand compared to some faster and louder songs
I sometimes found myself missing a part of the text while I was paying attention to other sounds and instruments, so didn’t get the whole story at once.

Just a quick reply.
@CD02 (Craig) had the entire song pretty much done & just needed a little help to polish it up & with the logistics of collaborating. He did all the hard work & his song is a great piece of music!
It was easy & a pleasure to work with you @CD02, thanks for including me!

Hi Guys,

Very nice tune.
I get the What’s Up vibe at times too but it veers away quite quickly.
Feels like country - though i’m no expert on such things. (The tv show Nashville is just about the extent of my knowledge. :))
Nice harmonies.
Love the clarity in the production.
