Laryne here! We just launched the Wish You Were Here at 50 Intro Challenge and we’d love for you to join in.
Justin rebuilt the intro lesson into five levels, so everyone can take part—total beginners included. All you need to do is learn your level, upload your take to YouTube, and add it to the Student Performances tab on the lesson page.
And yes… There are some insane prizes from Sony and the Pink Floyd team: the super rare WYWH50 fire extinguisher, an anniversary tee, the Diver mug, and the huge 50th Anniversary box set.
But honestly? We REALLY want to see your version. The deadline is December 11—celebrate this classic with us!
This was my first ever post on the JG community a year or so ago (beginner guitarist, so just a starting point) - I’ll do another before the deadline to see if there’s any improvement.
Me too, just read it in the mail and am so happy for Justin!
And he largely deserved good things like that happening!
I am really curious about how he made that lesson for five (!) levels!
I was going to say too that it will be hard in the short time, but …
So I think I’ll give it a go, as my festive open mic song works already quite ok, quite a bit earlier than in the recent open mics I took part in! and “Wish you were here” is such a classic I wanted to learn one day anyway!
Aaaw, Silvia. I am feeling honoured that you are thinking of me for this challenge.
Hhm, I will think about it and see, if I can get this under my fingers again (last attempts felt really rusty). But at least it would give my 12-string some well deserved play time. It’s tuned to DADGAD currently, so fingers crossed I am done with tuning before the deadline arrives.
All right, let’s go ! It was one of the first intro that I’ve learned in grade 1 a few years ago. Let’s see how fast I can come up with it and if those Em7 and A7sus4 chords are still as hurtful to my fingers than in my memories
Wow thanks for posting this Laryne. I awakened from my Thanksgiving food coma and I saw the Instagram message midday and thought wow Justin is the Man.
I came on to floyd with The Wall movie as a kid in the 80s but I am super familiar with this song. I just had not tried to play it. That was taken care of today.
Whoot whoot working on level 2 as we speak. I had to take a break for dinner and check the forums.
I can’t wait to participate. I hope I can represent well. I know there are some amazing rippers here. Its a like an amazing oppurtunity and its hella cool for Justin. I am rooting for all the forum regulars.
Looks an interesting technical challenge and will give it a go but not within the time frame, too much on at present.
Here is a confession, I was not aware of the song, what does that make me “a very old dog” perhaps.

As yes 75 a busy year, graduated in the July and got married in the September.
If I am honest I never really got into the music of Pink Floyd.

Lisa…I well remember your first AVOYP here in the Community…I remember being full of admiration and WYWH! Justin’s lesson is so well structured that I guess you can identify which level you’re at and if you want to just revisit it or step up to the next level.
Good luck to anyone who will partecipate!
Michael…really? I was aware of it because a classmate had the Lyrics written on her diary when I was about 16…anyway it wasn’t a song that happened to be in those audio-tapes we recorded and shared with friends, until I got a job and started buying CDs… and while it’s such a masterpiece, it wasn’t back then one I could listen to that much.
Well…this was only to say thank you for your confession, it makes me feel a bit less
I’m on my second day. Only got the first five bars down but am enjoying it😊 I’m hoping I’m half decent by the deadline so I can submit. Maybe it’s tricky to do but I think it would be great if there’s some kind of montage of all contributions. Celebrating all contributions. Such a great song😍
