Great album.
If you get a chance, also seek out Ozzy’s Speak of the Devil album, which is pretty much 100% Ozzy covering a bunch of Black Sabbath songs with his band. It might be heresy to say so, but some of my favorite recordings of those songs are from this album. For example, the version of Fairies Wear Boots on Speak of the Devil just slays.
Thanks J.W.C. i will give this a listen
For a few days I’ve been toying with the idea of trying to transcribe the trumpet solo from this song. Actually, I managed to find out the main motif starting with the sustained high F note (2:30-2:48) and which is repeated at the end.
My guess is that the song is in D minor (or F major) so I’ll try to use the D minor pentatonic and the F major scale to find out the rest.
I’ve been YT trawling on blues, watching lessons as one does at times when playing isn’t either convenient or the fingers are played out, and came across a reference to this band and song in particular. Some funky fine bluesy playing.
So to improve my improv bring together minor pentatonic scale pattern 1, play the chord tones, add the extra notes from the IV7 and V7 when playing over those chords, do it with vibrato, bends, slides, hammer-on, flick-off, mix it up (note lengths, triplets, volume) and feeling the groove. If only the doing was as easy as the knowing
Aha !! I keep meaning to look these up after the constant references by a certain gentleman in YT land ! Thx
It definitely sounds like it’s minor scale to me; it’s that sad feeling it has! Interesting that you want to try a trumpet solo, it’s a nice slow one so shouldn’t be too difficult.
I like to try and figure out Sax solos, they’re sometimes a lot of a challenge!
A bit more Symphonic metal from me, Epica are very similar to Nightwish, Floor Jansen occasionally features with them. https://youtu.be/EhGgb1E3HpQ
This is a short but immensely funny movie that I saw in my late twenties, it’s mainly because only one word is used throughout! ‘Rhubarb’. https://youtu.be/EOiwJkMvIYI
Last night I participated in the Community Open Mic and had a crack at Whiskey in the Jar. I first learned to love the song listening to Thin Lizzy’s version. The younger folk in the room, perhaps more dialed into the 90s than the 70s knew it from Metallica’s version. It’s well covered so thought I’d listen to a few of those versions. Fine times and a couple of surprises along the way. I shall stop short of firing up a popularity poll …
So much Whiskey in the Jar and not a sign of good ol’ Phil who used to sing me to sleep when I lived in Switzerland and dreamed of being Irish.
He had a quick wit, Phillo:
On being asked how he felt being black and Irish- “Like a pint of Guinness”
Some rather interesting Acapella, found on my research for different music, I really liked the sound of sub-bass, sort of reminds me a bit of the Huu! https://youtu.be/6ys4Q1PO5ek
I’ve been listening to a lot of old Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and the like, and that YT-algo-led me to Tommy Emmanuel and Mike Dawes. Here’s a great example, one I hope they perform at their show in CT in April.
My bad, Brian, I chose the tribute to Phil with Gary and Eric.
That clip is an early incarnation of Thin Lizzy, still with just a single guitar player.
Ever watched this, I think it’s great:
Is there anyone out there with a bit of Irish in them ?
Fill the the next line.
From Live and Dangerous.
I thought it was ‘any girls’
My bad “Is there anybody there with any Irish in them”. Soz
Followed by “are there any of the girls who ,”
WAYCLT ?
Well is was Quadrophenia until I dipped in here. Boy there’s some bad album editing on YT, glad I have the original. Anyway found this and Mr Lynott is a very naughty man !
Ok now back the The OOooo
