I usually learn (kinda) how to play and sing a song and record it on my pc webcam, sometimes with my Trio+ pedal backing track. Every couple of months I might do a āfriends & familyā production, where I email the usual suspects the ābonesā of a song, and they send me musical contributions, which I mix in Reaper and slap on some stolen video footage
The contributors are generally-
My brother Hans, drums and his son, Niels, piano (Dublin)
My cousin Lars, guitar (Copenhagen)
My son Tor, bass and me, guitar/vox (West Kirby)
My friend Chris, guitar, violin, mandolin (West Kirby)
After our last collaboration, Danish Cousin Lars announced heād like to get us all together to play in real life His daughter and son-in-law are heading off on summer holidays and have agreed to lend us their house, which has a music room in the cellar.
I understand there shall be practising, jamming, and probably even some recording.
The control freak in me is uneasy about the fact that others are deciding what to do, especially as I am the only one who has never actually played in a band
Itāll be good for the simple reason that I enjoy all their company immensely, and Iām sure being nudged out of my comfort zone will be a great learning experience. Stillā¦
I suggested we each choose 2 songs weād like to have a go at, but even such a simple proposal has started ādebatesā. Artistic differences are already raising their headsā¦
Flights have been booked for the second week in July.
I hope to have something to share upon my return
Congrats Brian! This is amazing. Jamming live with others as a band is an incredible feeling and I think youāre going to really enjoy it- artistic differences and all
I hear you on this, but try not to worry about it too much I am the one who takes the āleadershipā position in my bands. You have a lot of people/personalities and of course, everyone will have their own opinions. Having a leader to help provide direction and steer the musical ship will make everything go a lot smoother. You are probably the natural one to take that position since you head up the recording projects.
Currently with my band DyeV we are trying to add to the covers we can play to fill in any gaps we have in our set list. I told everyone recently that their job before we meet again was to make a list of songs they would be interested in playing so we can combine them all and decide as a group what we would be interested in playing. If there are too many options, my band mates will probably look to me to make that call. Having a leader has worked out well for us.
That said, having songs prepared is all good, but there is also something to be said for just jamming/winging it and seeing what comes of it
I will be looking forward to it! I hope to see/hear the evidence
Sure it will be fabulous, Brian, regardless of how the music making goes. I expect some stories after the fact told with your inimitable style and flair
Sounds like a fun project Brian.ā¦free summer accommodation in Denmark in a house with a music room! Iām sure the musical/artistic differences will turn into positive energy, the creative juices will flow and youāll have a whale of a time.
I look forward to watching/hearing the results later in the year.
Please try not to make the songs too obscure and remember a good leader listens to his fellow band members opinions .
The name Brian is a thing maybe Seven iconic musicians who were kicked out of their own band
and The Beach Boys are undoubtedly one of the most memorable groups in rock history with the most turbulent history. On the bandās 50th anniversary, singer Mike Love announced that bassist/songwriter Brian Wilson and guitarists David Marks and Al Jardine would not be joining the reunion tour. Wilson was perplexed and said in an interview that he felt like he was being firedā¦
no pressure, but these were all great musicians and some long time friends
⦠Aaa there was money involved too with them ā¦So have fun practicing
Is Rogier seriously telling me not to chat so much and actually share my playing?!?
Oh okay then⦠you can pop over to the originals section
Thanks for the food for thought, @Jenndye429
This will be a very different project than your bona fide band. Itās more like a spin-off or side-project, but hopefully great fun and if it does work out, thereās the possibility of repeats in the future
Even if itās a damp squib, Iāll still make something up
Thatās hilarious. I was chatting to a good German friend late last night and he suggested coming along. Not even as a roadie I said!
It appears weāre a 'democracyā, and Iām surrounded by Beatles, Pink Floyd and blues fans.
Sighā¦
At last you place me on an appropriate pedestal, my friend
