Hooked, this is catchy.
Here’s another variation on Billie Jean
The artist is Stephen Lovelight, he performed at our music club last month and then at a town just up the road from us this past weekend, there’s a playlist of some of those performances on my channel.
That is a very cool version Tony. Have you posted a video of him before? He looks familiar.
Yes, I posted his performance from our music club last month on a different thread.
Google Courtney Hadwin and America’s Got Talent to see her debut on the world stage.
Loved this quote from the comments…
Hi!
I don’t know if I am committing some kind of guitar blashphemy but I prefer some covers rather than the original songs.
Sometimes it’s because of the way it’s sung. Other times it’s because of the way it’s arranged. There are many reasons.
I can give an example of Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt. I can just feel a wise guy telling me about life as I hear him sing.
Do you prefer such covers too like me?
Didn’t Trent Reznor even say that the song belongs to Johnny Cash now?
Hmm… I could make a long list of covers I prefer over the original.
EDIT:
I will limit myself to three though.
This one came to my mind first:
Even when great Ray Charles sang the original, I like this version a lot more:
Finally, I do take the liberty listing this one here… Even if Bowie has written it. Anyways Mott The Hoople’s version was the first. Bowie’s version is better in my ears though…
That’s heaps and mountains better than the original, Richard
@LadyOfTheCastle Else!!! Never knew Springsteen covered that I need to add this to one of my playlists asap…
Hi Audrey,
There is a search function at the top right to see if it already exists and usually someone has already come before you with an same idea…
The music industry is built on covers… better well stolen than poorly invented.
Hi Audrey,
Great topic!
To me, the best cover is R-E-S-P-E-C-T by Aretha Franklin, original by Otis Redding. Aretha’s performance actually changed how the song was perceived: from Otis’ original where a husband is complaining about his wife not giving him the proper respect, to a kind of civil rights/women’s rights anthem. It’s an awesome rendition of the song:
I agree with All The Young Dudes and have long thought that. Giving them that song saved Mott’s career. The difference making David Bowie’s version better was of course Mick Ronson. Mick was the unsung hero and was classically trained. He arranged all of Bowie’s early stuff. My late sister was a massive Bowie fan and the early albums blasted through the house night and day. We went to see him on the Serious Moonlight tour. She also had Mick Ronson’s solo album.
Some songs people don’t always realise are covers. Here’s WITW:
@JokuMuu I stumbled upon this a couple of months ago, and I think it’s an absolute blast. I believe during that tour in Australia, at each show he covered a different song by an Australian band. Apparently, one of the Bee Gees was present when he played this. Must be one hell of an experience!
I am a huge Bowie fan as well. I dont like everything he has done, but there is no need for that since he tested the boundaries quite frequently…
Hmm, if it wouldn’t have been for the one fascinating Bowie portrait on a cover of a Rolling Stone that made me buy the magazine, I would likely still be listening to radio pop mainly… https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/353673376972383311/
But my adventure into discovering new music started right there and then.
I’m a bit jealous that you got to see him live. For whatever reason I never did. Will check Mick Ronson
