Mac's learning log

Workshop number 2 tonight , called Jazz combo

there was only one person from yesterday’s group , all the others were brand new people that I met for the first time
we were 8 players
we had 2 bass players , one was the beginner from yesterday , a trombone player , a very young transverse flute player , a singer , me on electric guitar and two teachers

we worked on Fever made famous by Peggy Lee
Easy simplified tabs for beginners

the first part of the song was easy , just the same trouble of staying all in tempo together
but the second part I had trouble keeping up with it
a part was faster and i got lost with my fingers
Its hard to learn a song in only one evening and play it with people you ve only met but it was fun !

the guy on bass was super duper cool and helpful with us beginners
it was a pleasant evening and everybody was nice

Now I have a nother new song to add to my practice routine
and next week , the teacher said we will work on another new song
Soon my practice will last 5 hours

No workshop next monday cause its a bank holiday , only the jazz workshop on tuesday

This sounds awesome. I might try and do in-person stuff next year, maybe. It might light a fire under my toosh and get me practicing more.

I was nervous at first but in the end its just sheer fun

I wrote to my guitar teacher tonight telling him that I wont follow the jazz combo group anymore

I have 2 reasons for it , the first one is that I come back home too sick
and the second one is I know why I get sick so much , its because its too tiring for me and also too frustrating
I cant read the damn sheets , its way too small , on my computer I have no trouble at all , I can always enlarge things if needed
but here … the tabs are too small with just a tiny dot , all a blur for my eyes , I cant read it , can t follow the song , get frustrated , get sick
And also , the song needs to be played with the pinky , and I m too much a beginner to not watch my hand on the neck when I use my pinky , and If I watch my hand … i can t read the sheet and i end up getting lost , get frustrated , get sick .
The teacher told me to get used to not watch my hand very quickly … funny mate ! If I could do it I would ! ( its not my usual guitar teacher )

I realised that I have no fun at all playing this way , all I have is feeling very unwell so I wrote to say I quit this group

Playing with others is sheer fun but playing a song you dont like or feel comfortable with is not !

Im just discovering that I have no problem learning from a video , but playing and reading tabs is not for me , not with my neurological issues

I’m sorry you had to bow out. It always feels like giving in, but it’s really just being proactive and knowing what works for you. I started learning a finger-style piece and even with the tabs big, and static on the screen, I still lose where I am constantly.

Hope your bookcase building goes smoothly, and all the bits and pieces are accounted for!

Sounds like you’ve made the right decision, Deborah. Health must come forst and you should feel totally free to chart your own course.

And sometimes teachers (or others) can make well intended comments that are just not helpful or even discouraging. A real art to meet somebody where they are and provide just what they need to progress their journey.

thank you so much guys for your replies , I m so glad to be part of this community

My health has been leading my life for the past 15 years …
I can barely go out , doing social stuff is impossible , thats why I ve been declared not able to work
I live the life of a Amish hermit

The music school was a test , I know that i can follow one to one lessons for half an hour a week , following one group will be tough but I ll try , but 2 groups is impossible , my body says NO !
So as always I will listen to him, he knows how to convince me !

true , this man was not a guitar teacher so maybe he doesnt know that what he was asking was hard
I kind of understand why there are less and less people interested in going to workshops at school
they have very few group lessons so they ask a lot ( too much ) from the students from the start
I wish we were able to learn our parts before playing all together , would have been easier , even if it was only a one week practice
and 1H30 of practice at once is a lot compared to the half hour lessons , a lot for me anyway because practicing 2 hours at home is not a problem
when I learn a song I spend 10 to 15 minutes and work on it everyday … not 1H30 !

only from one group , I keep the rock and vox group but I will not do the concert … I d die

ah thanks ! l feel less alone
the longer the song is , the harder it is !!!

Oh god ! I must go and work on it …

Playing catch up but good to see you continuing to grind away Deborah. Lots of ups and downs but all moving in the right direction. Can relate to your health issues as my wife has had some cardiac issues for around 20 years and severely restricted in what she can do.
Worse since 2020 without going into details but pretty much only goes out for medical RDVs. So I think you are doing a grand job and keeping focused despite the restriction’s.
Chapeau !

thanks a lot toby for your super sweet reply

I totally relate to that
I try to go out a least once a week for grocery shopping at the supermarket but nothing more and If I have a medical appointment or have to go to town then my supermarket will deliver my order at home
I also try to have a walk everyday in the countryside around my house , nothing far since the migraines starts quickly
( I suffer from all the panel of migraines existing … like 3 or 4 different sorts of migraines , at least its never monotonous )
But its impossible to have a social life so I m glad that the JG community exist :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I hope that your wife has a hobby , it really helps to forget about the health issues
I love puzzles / jigsaw , its a quiet hobby

Hi @MacOneill Deborah, you may already have this but last year Justin did a lesson on Christmas songs that came with a pdf download. Just very simple chord progressions and the lyrics.

thanks a lot Zyggy
No i didnt have this one , i didnt even know it existed

Looks like its the same songs as in the app

in the book I can read the lyrics so thanks a lot
For Christmas i will try to play while my mother will try to sing so its good to have the lyrics
I love the extra infos in the intro , there are things to learn like changing the key , its new to me

the twelve days of christmas … must avoid this one or I will have the song stuck in my head for months !!!

If you really wanna shake things up, a lot of traditional carols have alternate Aussie lyrics, since the chilly, white christmas stuff doesn’t really apply.

~ On the first day of Christmas
My true love sent to me,
An emu up a gum tree ~

etc.
