Mac's learning log

Hmm… Do you like that song? Justin has a really good lesson on it. It’s not too difficult and your playing along to Adele shows that you can shift between strumming patterns. So… If some day - at some point when it feels right for you - you want to try playing without backing tracks, this could be an idea :slightly_smiling_face:

@JokuMuu
No i dont really like it but it was one of those : " you must play this song to pass the level "
I will probably have to re work on that song again , not because i like it , but because there are stuff to practice on it

Now i completed picking up and down level 4

I should re work the cow boy chords exercices cause i absolutly don t remember it :sweat_smile:

HOW TO PASS GRADE 1

#1 You should be able to tune your guitar with a tuner.

==> Done and I can change the strings

#2 Memorize and play the 8 essential beginner chords on the guitar.

==> Done but still a bit of work on G

#3 Play 30 chord changes in 1 minute.

==> Done

#4 Play The Old Faithful strumming pattern consistently at 80 beats per minute.

==> Done on Horse with no name at 113 bpm

#5 Memorize 5 easy songs.

==> I can’t do that ! I have memory issues :confused:
I will always need a sheet with tabs to help me …
If I work on this , playing will not be fun at all for me cause it ll be real hard and so far there’s no song on which I want to put such a tremendous amount of effort :confused:
And since I can’t go out of my house much … there’s no risk of me going to a party where I’ll be playing guitar

So ? Can i say that I passed Grade 1 and move on the Grade 2 ?

I think you can. You’ll continue to learn songs as you do grade 2 anyway.

I see guitar having different layers and each takes an amount of processing power in our brains until it has become a fully automated skill.

So initially trying to make a chord shape keep even a simple strumming pattern is too much to process. As we practice these tasks gradually take less brain power which eventually leaves some spare capacity maybe to add something else.

This is a long way of saying that I see recalling a song while keeping rhythm and doing chord changes as another process for the brain to deal with, just like when people try to layer on singing and find they can’t sing and do chord changes. On good days I can remember a few songs and then out of the blue I’ll lose my place in a song I know fairly well. I’m sure it will come to you as you play songs again and again but I don’t think it’s a reason not to start exploring grade 2

thanks a lot

I feel a little demotivated at the moment cause i m stuck on many exercises ( the power chords and picking stuff )
I just realised that i might not be holding my guitar correctly , so I ll work on it
it may improve my picking

I also have to bring my guitar to the gitar shop … it sounds awfull …

Don’t worry too much, the journey is filled with ups and downs, always remember how far you’ve come (which your LL is a great vehicle to provide). If you’re feeling a little demotivated I can recommend a couple of days practice time just playing songs you know, the exercises will still be ther for you to go back to, always keep the smiles :slight_smile:

If you need any advice don’t hesitate to ask, you’ll get any tips you’re looking for (I know you know this, but it’s always worth remembering!). When you say you might not be holding your guitar correctly how do you mean? Worth revisiting Justin’s lesson on this perhaps?

Last year , i played a streak of 12 weeks then stopped and just sometime to times after

I hit the 12 weeks streak this week :slight_smile:
and feel the same frustration and demotivation as last year … feeling like im not advancing
i know its not true … its just a feeling

I got only one feedback on my last recording … it didn t help me , i was a bit disappointed cause i worked hard on this song

ì did revisit the video but i found the answer somewhere else
i knew that the hand should follow the line of the neck
What i didn t know was : the line of the neck should follow the angle of the knukles !
On YS i m at a level where i need to pick a little faster so i need the guitar to be placed correctly otherwise the fingers can t follow the pace
it also means : no more watching the strings :open_mouth:

Hey Deborah, couple of things to comment on from your last message there (then I’ll leave you alone, promise!! :wink: ).

Yep, we have pretty much all been there before and can 100% relate to it, it’s not a great feeling and above all else it can stop you wanting to pick up the guitar, this is not a good thing of course!! Justin has a whole series of videos on rut busting but if you’ve not seen this one single video yet take a look.

That is a shame regarding feedback on your last recording, please don’t get disheartened or think no-one’s interested, can be a whole heap of factors like when it’s been posted or the sheer volume of recordings that are posted these days, I bet you someone will find it further down the line, reply and it gets a new life! No doubt you worked hard and as hard as it is, like your LL, the recordings should mainly be for you to enjoy and take satisfaction in. Of course people commenting and giving feedback is important, we all want it, but it will ebb and flow. I guess the conclusion I’m trying to put across is that it all works in swings and roundabouts.

Final sentence or two on the guitar neck, guidelines are good but above all you should find the position comfortable. If the precise textbook position isn’t working for you then don’t worry too hard, like with all these things you ultimately find what works for you, whether it’s guitar positioning, posture, fretting, strumming. Yes there are things to aim for but it all comes back to wanting to pick up the guitar, so comfort (within guided boundaries) is key.

One of the first big challenges we all face! But you look cooler when you’re playing like a pro so worth the effort and you’ll be surprised at how well your fingers know where to go already without looking! :wink: :rofl:

All the best :heartbeat: :guitar:
