Ok. I will next time. I turned the gain higher than normal as Mal said my vocals were soft. So I will go back to my normal setting.
Cheers
Thanks Mike, appreciate that.
Thanks Paul, “relaxed” like a Duck I think, calm on the outside but frantic inside
I would like to thank all the performers, you all did a great job.
Richard thank you for your behind the scenes work.
Alternatively turn the guitar down a little, Ron, for the same relative effect. And in your case I think that would have been OK given the overall level being quite strong (not problematic, but enough that I had to turn down for you while turning up for some others)
Unfortunately missed the show but looking forward to watching the video. Hope everyone, especially those making their debut, had a great time,
Video is now online:
I’ve increased volume of some performers and chat where I could reasonably do it - some people were very, very quiet! Enjoy.
Oops, sorry, always forget that. Sent it to you just now.
Thanks Mate
Hi Mate,
Can you tell me if mine was one that you needed to increase the volume on, just for future reference.
That was good fun, everybody!
And in a way kind of nice that it is over and done with in the morning, not going around in the back of your mind all day and taking up most of the evening…
As usual, good to see what everyone is up to with their axe-grinding.
Also a good demonstration that it’s not the end of the world when technical gremlins raise their ugly heads
Well done to the debutants- you guys were like old pros!
Great show everyone! It was a great way to start my Sunday morning. It was nice to get more music from Down Under and debuts from Ron and Craig.
Well I found it a bit weird having to watch the recording as I missed that important live vibe but could not make it this morning but hey what a super show.
Big thanks to @Richard_close2u for pulling things together this year, feeling a bit selfish by completely immersing myself in BLIM and being completely absent from the OM organisation but great job. And great to see we have yet again tried an EMEA/East biased show. Only a few takers but hopefully @CD02 @RonG and @jkahn (yeah I know you bailed at the last minute but your heart was still in it !) will encourage others to come forward, as I am sure we have more than a few members way out East. But great debuts for Craig and Ron.
Anyway thought I’d pen some comments on a delightful 90 minutes entertainment !
So here we go.
Mal & Lara – great opening song, guess those Reservoir Dogs sunglasses as not quite needed this time of year up North. Then from LA to Chicago, great transition! Super performance from you both, as usual, great playing and wonderful harmonies, You could play LTTM at every OM and I’d be a happy squirrel!
Mr Larsen – Always a unique and great song choice, convinced you’d posted the first song but it disappeared off my JGC radar. When you said Hansen I got flash back to some child band referenced by Denis Leary, glad it was another group, Thought provoking song and then you drop Bill !! And one of his greatest songs. Your Waites impersonation excelled and well played as well. Next BB German Metal ? Great cover.
Craig – Great debut good to see “East” represented at a decent time for you guys. Despite what you said plenty of banter ! Great song choice to get you going, been a while since I hear the Dragons and that was solidly played and sung for your first time, typical chilled Ausie !! Super job and what a follow up with Greenday, Again despite what you were saying about the pressure and nerves they did not show through. Does it get better ? I’d love to say yes but I am still bricking it each time I perform. Well done sir !
Alexei – Good to see you performing again and what no jazz ? Then you bring us some exquisite Schubert wow that was stunning, beautiful. Tango in the Sky was fun very decadent and wonderfully played been a while since I heard that. Top job on both performances.
Mr Preece – Good to see you wearing the rain hat/beanie, new look ? 4NB didn’t see that coming but great song choice for you David. Suits your playing style and perfect for you vocals. And then you reel out another classic from Mr Young. Interestingly I did not see you change anything but there was some extra reverb on the guitar that sounded real good. Yet again perfect fit vocally but a reflection on how your singing still continues to develop. You delivered on both songs, good to see you getting back in the groove, Chapeau.
Ron G – Good to see you making your OM debut after all the recording you have shared with us over the years ! Ah Don Henley cover hope you don’t get a copyright strike form the Legal Eagles. Its 11 hours after the show and its not been taken down yet. BoS sounded really good, super Maton tone and your vocals shinning through as normal, bit of clipping on the harmonies but all good overall, solid playing. Super relaxed and cool. Wonderful second choice and as you say not common on guitar, sounded superb, acoustic and phaser worked really well alongside your vox ! Top job on both songs.
Mr Lennon – Good to see the music room developing, “fetch the comfy chairs” !! Bird of Paradise what a song choice, like you say great hit by a virtually unknown artist ! Been a long time since I heard that, so thanks for memory and the great delivery and lovely solo. Second was a new one to me but seemed to be a fusion of many songs from yesteryear progression wise, vague recollection during the chorus but I don’t do modern music, what ever it is or was sounded pretty darned good and nicely delivered, Good to see you performing.
Doc Dan – Great to see you back with more originals. Both songs well constructed and flowing with simple but good lyrics. There is some less is more going on there that makes a song sound great. Really good story telling in both songs and relatable. Your originals are always a delight and once again you did not disappoint. Great closing songs for a top show.
Roll OM 28 in the New Year. Hoping to get back in the organising as BLIM will be finished by then and will just need years of consolidation.
Well done to all the performers and big thanks to everyone in the audience, without you there would not be a show !
Yeah, it was. I also boosted your talking intro. Not as much as some of the others though.
IMHO where people go wrong and end up too quiet is they try to avoid all clipping. I think you should maximise your inputs/AI gain to the highest volume you can where you’re right on the threshold of clipping during performance. Some minor clipping is also fine - e.g. with a super loud percussive strum where most of your performance is a more moderate volume.
Thanks Toby much appreciated from such a seasoned performer much as yourself I actually quite enjoyed it.
Thanks, I’ll look into it. The input on the AI was backed just short of clipping. Reaper was set where the bars were hitting about -6db and on OBS the indicators were tracking into the yellow I had backed them down from creeping into the red.
I’ll do some googling and experiment with some settings. Thanks
Also noticed on the recording that my video appeared to jump a couple of times, I’ll make sure my Wifi is strong too next time.
Great night everyone sounded great except me .
Oh well next time I will ensure my vocal gain is right for harmonies if I use them. Over all my voice was too loud and guitar to soft. But hats off to everyone else
Cheers
RonG
Craig, sounds like your setup was perfect for making a recording at home. But be aware that for some reason we’ve not figured out, Zoom seems to cut about 10dB. That (plus some sync problems recently) means I have now given up on using OBS and just go directly from my interface into Zoom. And you may have heard in the soundcheck that I was initially really soft. Solved that by boosting gain on my interface for both guitar and vocal.
@TheMadman_tobyjenner Thanks Toby. I did tweak the reverb up a couple of dB on the PlayAcoustic. Missed your encouragement and banter before, during and after.
