Silvia's Learning Log

 maybe just writing the main chords’ name might be enough without the extensions…look at this bar for example…within the same bar the notes will go up and down the scale…

The purpose is to identify chords in order to make the memorising of the piece easier…right?..…uhm…maybe…
…And for where to play those notes on the fretboard there are the pros’ performances on YouTube :joy: How did people do before YouTube? There must be a way!

 the (dis-) adventures of being self-taught :joy:

Silvia, well done. You thumb is very steady and the rhythm sounds confident and the picking is clear. I enjoyed listening to your playing. I have had to postpone learning these new lessons while I finished my grade 2 consolidation recording, but listening to your recordings makes me look forward to learning these in the new year.

It has to be…with 3 Masterpieces of Classical Guitar in it! Isn’t Standard Notation so beautiful?:smiling_face_with_three_hearts::smiling_face:

Steve your feedback is too kind! Thank you, what really matters is that you enjoyed the listening, that makes me really happy!

DECEMBER UPDATE

I much enjoyed my unstructured practice month and along with preparing Jingle Bells Rock for school I practiced a lot on my Classical Guitar.

I’m working also on a fingerstyle accompainement arrangement where I sing too and, in order to imitate what I hear in the original recording and bring out the feeling of each section of the song I have either quater, eighteenth or sixteenth notes…and I used triplets too, because they sound just too sweet not to be used! And while I practice to tap my foot consistently and fingerpick along keeping time I feel such a sense of accomplishment at being able of this! Soon an AVOYP?! probably in January

And below a few clips to document and for me to do some self-assessment of how I’m working on my fretting hand; clip 1 and 2 are my own arrangements :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
From clip 2 you can tell how I still struggle to keep my fingers nicely curled on the frets…they’re all bent toward the left on that C chord  …in clip 1 they’re better positioned (maybe because it’s THE piece of my heart?! :face_with_hand_over_mouth:) Clip 3 really shows how I still struggle to keep the fingers close to the fretboard and have pinky ready to land where it should :see_no_evil:.

On a brighter side I have little idea what the fingerpicking hand is doing, and while it always catches the right strings I will leave it with itself so that I can focus more on the fretting hand. Also being able to do these little arrangements helps a lot to connect while I play and use most of the focus to improve these graceless fretting fingers of mine! Phrasing must be postponed.

I’m quite confident I will improve with more practice and dedication!

While I missed your smiling face that always reflects your joy in playing, Silvia, I did love those clips.

Your fingers seem relaxed, have a high degree of independence, and no ‘flying fingers’

Bravo. Your dedication is relflected in that.

Oh and the music was wonderful so soothing.

Thank you David, it still take quite a lot of effort not to make them fly away, but they’re way better than when I started…refining will take time and practice.

I guess it takes a life time, Silvia. But the music you play is already such a delight to listen to.

Super precise playing but playing that still has emotion in it.
Lovely.

Hi Silvia. Those were lovely melodies. I thought your pinkie worked really well, easily stretching to fret string 6 and curling nicely not to mute the strings below. I am practicing something that requires very similar pinkie movement and it is very difficult for me. Did you independently work on your pinkie with some exercises or is it just the type of music you play that trained it well?

Uhh, what a treat for my ears this morning! Your playing is so decent, gentle and sensitive!
Your fingers are moving so precisely and your pinky is collaborating perfectly.
You’ve come a long way, Silvia! It’s pure joy to follow your updates :cherry_blossom:!

Thank you Boris and Andrea @Boris1565 @Helen0609 …your kind comments are much appreciated!

Not easily actually, it tends to displace the other fingers on the Am which need to be hold in place…

It is very difficult, Boris, it needs a lot of patience…what works for me is doing the movements very slowly and be aware that when the the strech won’t be enough or will cause too much effort/tension then try to help reaching the targeted fret with some adjustment in the wrist or fore arm. Not sure how much correct it is, the movement needs to be minimum and the fingers close to the frets…it’s not easy.

Aiming to Andrea! :see_no_evil_monkey: That C chord is painfully leaning all on the left :see_no_evil_monkey:

I think it’s like yours…they pretend to behave and look fine :joy: But at least it collapses down less frequently now

I think the training is coming from the music I play, which are chord melody-like kind of things in the key of C or Am or G. I made this extra exercise for myself: I put ring finger on the bass root note (C or G) and while holding it down I go up and down the scale with the other fingers.

Silvia, very nicely played and your fingers look so relaxed. I wish that I could get my pinkie to curl like that, but it is probably my perpetual Achillies heel

Oh no! If I can work on it there’s no reason why you can’t!
