Stratocaster or Telecaster - Why You Chose One?

Hello there,

recently I found out Robben Ford and his ā€œFreedomā€ makes me wanna play Telecaster so much. I have stratocaster squier at home, really budget one, but I am fully acoustic guitar player, so I dont use it at all - only silent training.

I would love to know why YOU picked Strat or Tele?

I just watched Andertons video for that and I am sharing with you the ending jam, which sounds really good to me. I am would like to read some nice stories and maybe I can find myself in one… so I could start writing down a Christmass letter.
Last months I can see I really like blues vibe. DavidSGuitar shared really great samples on Tele from BLIM2.

It goes even deeper than that - what strat, or what tele?

I started with a HSS Squier strat, and eventually found the humbucker weak and changing tuning laborious - even going to drop D put every string out of tune.

Switched to a fixed bridge Tele with dual Seymour Duncan humbuckers and coil split - a couple of years on, I still love it, the humbucker and single coil tones are both to die for, and the neck feels fast and smooth. The standard Player Tele didn’t do much for me, though.

[Edit] So: the feel, the sound, and the ease of doing alternate tunings.

@jkahn Yeah… I can already see there are many options how to change your sound and I am pretty sure you can put in many money before you find it.
I found out that having brass saddle on Tele is must have.

Would you divide this two instruments for some genre?

Like Tele for blues and Start for rock? Or opposite? I see when it comes to change one there are two really strong groups defending their own opinion. Feels like war sometimes.

Edit: Huh, I can see that pickups cost almost like Tele Squier.

There are definitely strong opinions out there, especially on the internet

You can find examples of players of all genres playing strats, teles, and other guitars. You get different sounds from different guitars & pickups. Tweaking the tone & volume knobs goes a long way though. And most of the tone comes from the amp.

Probably most important ā€œspecā€ thing is the pickups. If you’re planning on doing heavy distortion, humbuckers are important.

I think it’s usually more cost effective to buy a guitar with the pickups you want already in it than to buy the pickups separately.

@jkahn I think there is a reason why I prefered acoustic over two years that I am playing… and that is the difficulty and many nuances. I can clearly imagine when I pick up my Start, there are ā€œtoo many knobsā€ and options. Same goes for my Boss Katana MK2. Man… I believe it has not even opened its potential in sound how I am not using that and its kinda shame.
Telecaster looks much simple to me than Strat and it looks like you dont need to buy any effects at all… I already saw some great samples just plugged in any AMP.

Hmm, that is pretty good point. I am digging more about that right now. Seems like that Squier by Fender is the low cost entry level. Would you recommend it at all or soon or later there will be inner feeling that you want something better? I am pretty sure my ā€œFENDER SQUIER Sonic Stratocaster HSS MN BPG BLKā€ has the cheapest components and maybe that could be reason why I have not fell in love with electric too…
Because my guitar never sounded like ones in any videos.

This is an easy one for me although I can’t really give you a good reason…

It’s a Tele all day long. Has to be one of the 50s or 60s looking models with the controls in the horizontal metal bar - the later models that lost that, lost something that visually shouts tele IMO.

Strats don’t interest me - they are the iconic electric guitar shape but they’ve been done to death (yes there’s been a lot of Tele’s too). I don’t own one and am yet to see one that makes me want one. I’m not disputing that are great Strats out there.

Clearly there’s nothing rational in what I’ve said above, so if you love a Strat there’s no reason to be offended or try to convince me that I’m wrong

I own a Fender Tele Vintera 60s style, some shade of blue

@mattswain Cool. I think it is great that you can choose more with feel and not what is rational. Same apply for choosing acoustics, because you need that connection.

I am gonna check some of your recordings once again since I am now interested more in electrics and Teles.

Is this your guitar?

I found this one looks great to me, so I think we have similar ā€œeye tasteā€:

Edit:
Ok I found your 2022 topic and you have the dark blue one, such a great looking guitar too.
I could not find any recording of you. You did not share anything here on JGC?
I can see you got brass saddle too. This is really recommended in any video. Compensated brass saddle.

Yes, you found it, has all the things that I like in a Tele, from the first run of Vintera’s.

I don’t think I have recorded anything with it so far. There’s probably YouTube videos from far better players than I am that will show it off better than I can. In short though, it does everything I want from a Tele and is nicely made without the hefty price tag of a USA model (still not cheap though)

I’ll have to record something with it soon

@mattswain I am feeding myself with demos about that Classic Vibe 60 and that is dangerous area, because every seconds I can just put it into cart on Thomann.

I am sure you are great player and if you dont mind sharing any of your plays on your great looking guitar… I am into it.

I got a Tele half a year ago. The only two things that make it a Tele are the body shape and neck. Everything else is basically a Les Paul. So not sure if I even have a Tele right now.
But to me it’s Tele over Strat and I don’t actually know why. I choose guitars with my eyes first and Tele has something that makes it interesting to me. I’m gonna get a classic Butterscotch Blonde one with a black pickguard eventually, because it’s just so cool.
And at the same time Strats are kinda boring to me. It’s a great guitar and one of the most iconic models for a reason, but I don’t feel that attraction to it.

Hehe, Michal, you might as well pull the trigger
I remember clearly the careful consideration and research you put into selecting an acoustic purchase, which resulted in your beloved Furch…
Well that GAS didn’t get you far, did it?

What made me choose a Tele- and a strat-style guitar?
Well, I’m a good :ewe:!
People say you need one. @Richard_close2u told me to buy a G&LTele, so I did (and am very pleased with it).
Tbh, I don’t think I sound materially different on any of my 3 electrics and like them all for aesthetic and personal reasons, but even a slight tweak on my Pod Go pedal will make 1000 times the difference to the sound/tone.
Looking forward to see what you choose and how long you can hold out

Indeed why one or the other ? Why not both !!

@metramaks I can understand. When I look on Tele something ā€œold gold timeā€ hit on me. I really like that vintage style. Strat looks just too modern to me.

@brianlarsen Haha, I was hoping no one would notice. :joy::joy::joy:
What to say… I dont have Tele and I heard everyone must have one?!
I got Tele like my 3D printed guitar, but it is not that great at all. I think I did it year ago and I can see over this short time some twists on neck. I am pretty sure this model is more serious.
Like… I dont have to buy it, but I did some achievement in work and I got extra payment and how else should I celebrate it? :joy:

Hehe, don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against spending money on any number of guitars. In fact if they provide you with joy and you can afford them, it’s a good thing to do
You did remind me of a question I asked a couple of years ago (and still feel the same about, even though I have purchased a couple of guitars and and expensive multi-fx pedal since then

That’s what I also think.
You can have either a Strat with/without whammy bar, with humbuckers or single coils and the same for the Tele shape, or have a Les Paul with coil splitting humbuckers and get pretty much the sound of single coils.

I would also consider the body shape for comfort, eg. I am not a fan of my Les Paul copy in this regard. Being heavy and having pretty ā€œsharpā€ edges, it doesn’t feel nice when being sat down for example, unlike a Stratocaster or an SG.

Never tried a Telecaster, but it also has less round edges and is heavier than a Stratocaster.
I’m planning to build my own electric (but didn’t get around to it yet), because it seems all those available are not built for me
and even, to me it seems that the manufacturers (at least the big players) aren’t really trying to produce really versatile guitars, but are happy that most players want to have one ef every type.

@brianlarsen Haha, dont try to talk about my purchased Digitech Trio + Band Looper with original SFX pedal. It is just staring at me from cabinet while I enjoy my beloved Pioneer. :joy:
Actually if I pick Tele and it would be great… I am gonna send out my current Strat, because I dont have any special bond to it. I think it has something to do with visual too. Nothing to hate here, but it is preference and all black just does not magnify me.
It was early buy when I did not know who I am… and it was bundle with Katana MK2.

Now I am more defined about what I play. Also know little bit more about music and also guitars, so I am roaming around.
Because in acoustic area only thing that can please me now is around 4000$ and this Tele is 450$… so. :joy:
Also Tele would give me options about luthiering. Similar like I did on my Pioneer with pins. I just like to work on my guitar.

Secretly… I think you are just Thomanns employe trying to trick me buy it. :squinting_face_with_tongue::joy:

@domi7 Thanks for input, Dom. I think it is really racional from you looking for what you like and looking for ways… when I look back I really did not need that Strat and Katana in the beginning, because it felt really overwhelming…

I am not even trying to compare, but it reminds me how Dylan played acoustic and one day he jumped to electric. I promise I will love my Pioneer still.

And what is important! I did not buy Tele… yet.

Still waiting for some nice Strat story. It could be really great plot twist. :joy:

Edit: The thing I can start doing now is trying to use the pick. I got like 10s of them. I am pretty sure there are some tunes, that I can play fingerstyle, I can play with pick too!

Hi Michal, I have both, got the squire Strat first in Lake Placid Blue because I am a fan of Hank Marvin and the Shadows and wanted to learn some of their songs which I still haven’t managed to do yet it’s on my list, the tele is a polar white squire and I got that because I am a fan of status quo and Rick Parfitt and the other colours I did not like pretty weak reasons. I also have a vintage VG100GT just like Marc Bolan used to play a Gibson LP type

This is an important consideration. You can make things like others with wiring jobs and electronics in a lot of ways.

I have 2 strats and they both sound totally different.

I dont think looking at you favorite guitar players and seeing what they play with is a bad way to go TBH.

I personally can’t wait to get a tele in my hands.

I have a Fender strat and a Burns guitar which is a strat shaped body but with three tuners per side headstock. I don’t have a Tele….yet!

To me, the strat shape is what a guitar should look like. That said, I will probably buy a Tele at some point, just because….
But I would never buy a guitar of a particular make or model and particular colour because that’s what such and such a guitarist played. Having a guitar like them won’t make me play like them!

SG’s LP’s etc are all okay, and I may or may not have something like that someday….but they’re not strats!

As for tone…pickups and amps will make a far bigger difference than different guitars will.
