The vocal range of Layne Staley is wild, one of my favorite singers of all time.
Unbelievably, I had never heard Johnny Cash’s cover of ‘Personal Jesus’ until recently, even though it was recorded over 20 years ago. I fell in love with the guitar part, and am now learning to sing and play it. I hope to have an AVOYP soon.
Toby…so funny!! Thanks for sharing!
Another brilliant work from Mr McClintock.
After some of the things I’ve seen here, I felt I needed to share this It’s an oldie, but there’s nothing but positive vibes from it. I watched it again just yesterday. Always brings a tear to my eye…
Everything from that album is worth a listen in my opinion.
The flamethrower guitar, I want one.
What a banger, can’t wait for the full album!
It’s nice to have someone else blow our trumpets now and again
I’m sure many of you may have not come across @MarkPeters learning log-
He’s learning guitar with Justin, but has been involved in music for a long time.
I just listened to the ’81 John Peel recording sessions of A Formal Sigh (that’s a big deal if you were a UK artist ). Any band that played at Eric’s in Liverpool in the late 70s/80s has auto-street-cred to burn
The teenage me would have been a fan.
Belated welcome, Mark!
Yes, your honour; guilty as charged. That’s me in the white jeans (and on bass).
I remember the session very well. Dale Griffin of Mott the Hoople was the producer. Mike Robinson (a BBC veteran) was the engineer. 5 September 1981.
Some trivia on the songs:
- Ev Rev - short for Evolution Revolution. See if you can transcribe this chord sequence!
- Bleak Intrusion - aka Oblique Intrusion. It was a long day and after several takes of this I knew I was too tired to play my part properly. I ended up simplifying the middle section just to get it done.
- Looking at Walls - I still play this regularly.
- Ad Nauseam - unusual in having three distinct bass parts. Greg Milton played the fast one. I played the heavy one, and overdubbed a melody that got buried in the mix. I am thinking of exhuming it into something new one day.
The band was:
Florence Sullivan - vocals
Roger Sinek - drums
Greg Milton - guitar (he’s missing from the photos because he couldn’t get time off work that day)
Robin Surtees - guitar
…and me.
Another cryptic message for those who are listening.
Yeah likely a repeat but a much needed one
So empty house decided on a long walk to the Mont St Michel staging post, where push me pull yous take the punters the big church on a rock. So after 7.5km of a wonderful riverside walk the last thing I expected to hear was this !!
Kin ace !! Tiny marque bar at the side of the barrage. So I complimented to bartender with his choice of muzik and he was gogsmacked when I said C’est Le Drop Lick Murphys and then added the tittle. No doubt bemused as I crossed to the other side of the river singing the chorus amongst the many confused tourists.
Daughter and kids on the road back to barren wastes of West Yorks, then back tomorrow. So
Still an empty house but the great Spot provides TDKMs and Rumjacks Best of Playlists.
So the studio monitors are cranked for a Celtic Punk Fest !!
No apologies for another repeat from yesteryear aka old forum. But this song is a synopsis of the last week or so. But we found the tunnel and there is light at the other end.
Also my old skool mentor has been suggesting broken tendon options in Open C once the appetite is back. Found a C/D tuning playlist that threw up one of my all time favourite songs and apt for how things were earlier this week.
Nearly but not this time.
The dance with the Reaper is always a heart beat away. Live life to the full.
And carry a sawn off if he turns up when not expected
not this time!
There’s those bands that you think are great and yet keep forgetting about. Jane’s Addiction are one of those bands for me. Have been listening to them since my student days but also forget about them for years at a time. They’ve hit my playlist again in the past few days and are back on repeat play. They should have been so much bigger than they were
Three days is epic
cool story.
Thanks for sharing
Love them, they are another early HellCat records early finds. My wife and I have been fans since Mike McColgan was singing. I hope Al comes back soon. We missed him when we saw them last fall. What a fantastic show.
Just stumbled across this.
