I’ve picked up on this on your LL Rogier.
Yay! My axeman’s son, Will is free, with a 15-month suspended sentence
I don’t have to spend a couple of hours writing prison letters at the weekend any more
… Will I use the time wisely for practice?
I am sure Chris will be very relieved.
Oh I like that!
Busy times, but still carving out time for my six-strings
I’m still happy having reduced ‘new topics’ and sticking most things in my LL, although there’s a new one brewing on the horizon…
I went to Henry Priestman’s (The Yachts, It’s Immaterial, The Christians) 70th birthday party gig on Saturday and had a great time. I’d forgotten what a great songsmith he is. There were loads of guest musicians and I was tickled to note that about half of them have played in my living room Henry and his bass player were staying at my friend Nick’s house who plays fiddle for them, so I crashed the ‘after-show party’. Turns out I was the only one there, but had a lovely time nonetheless…
Good news: Chris’ son Will had his sentencing the 10 days ago and is now a free man! 15-month suspended sentence with 10 hours a month community service.
All the prison stuff put me in mind to have a bash at The Mercy Seat by Nick Cave. (Johnny Cash does a great cover too).
I enjoyed @Rmking60 tackling One by U2 and it reminded me I’ve been meaning to give this a go for a while (even if I have very mixed feelings about that band). It’s been ages since I did a Justin lesson, but I enjoyed it and tried to play it the way he teaches.
Needs more work, but happy with the direction it’s going in. I’ll definitely revisit this.
I’m expecting 55 guests this evening for nibbles, drinks, song and merriment.
An artist acquaintance announced on fb before Easter that he had terminal cancer with only months left to live, so I offered if he’d like me to host a party that he could invite all his friends to. He said yes, please…
His good friend is bringing mics, keyboards and monitors.
I’ve warned the neighbours…
A couple of very nice covers Mr L. Not familiar with the first and though I recall One, when ever I see that song title I think of the Metallica song. Hit and miss relationship with U2 and I was ok up to Joshua Tree but interest waned after that.
But good to see you doing some proper learning again
Keep em coming !
Cheers, Big Man
You should check out the Cash version
Achtung Baby had some good stuff on it, but yeah, I think if you removed the Irish connection my interest would be minimal…
Never stopped… but it’s ‘glacial’
Glad I dropped by the LL, Brian, to be entertained.
These songs have something in common for me . . . I know them both from the JC versions, not the originals. Many years ago I was besotted with Cash’s One and when I (briefly) though of playing it discovered it was U2.
Seeing as U2 vibes were discussed, I enjoyed the first 3 and the live Under A Blood Red Sky, never got what the fusss was over Joshua Tree, and thereafter can cheery-pick a few tunes. Overall in my mind, I always think of REM in the same breath and their first albums all the way until Monster are far more to my liking.
Best I stop before I incur Mod Wrath
As for One, I can play the rhythms but fitting the words SIGH
Such a great gesture, Brian. I am sure you will have fun! You are great human being.
I enjoyed both songs, your own signature all over them.
Cheers, David,
One thing’s for sure- the Man in Black had a superb ear for songs to cover. No genre boundaries at all
We Catholics love a bit of self-flagellation
Hey, that’s Half!
You know that with persistence you would crack it, but time is precious…
We had such a lovely musical evening.
What a way to celebrate your life, surrounded by family and friends
Feeling blessed
There’s an interesting story behind this. The producer Rick Rubin produced a series of very successful Johnny Cash albums, late in Cash’s career, The American Recordings series. I read in a biography of Cash that during this period Rubin would send Cash hundreds of suggestions for covers, many of which Cash recorded, including Hurt and One. Those records revived Cash’s career, introduced him to many younger listeners and solidified his status as an American musical icon.
Indeed. I was tickled when Cash/Rubin released the boxset Unearthed a couple of months after his death. Genius.
Yes! That contains maybe my favorite late-Cash cover: the duet with Joe Strummer of Redemption Song. Gosh, that can give me goosebumps.
Talking of Cash…
He features in this
I started off just playing the original but couldn’t help myself changing the tune, which remains derivative, and in turn required minor lyrics alterations.
Is it good?
No.
Is it a musical expression of my guitar journey at present?
Absolutely!
Lyrics
It’s the same old story as a boy named Sue; dad leaves home- it’s sad, but true
He abandons son and wife, heads East to start a new life
Years pass by and the boy’s a man. He’s mean and tough and head of his clan
When the enemy comes, he rides to face the Hun
Sunufatarungo- father and Son
Conflict of the ages- no one’s ever won
Hadubrand meets him on the field; Face to face with sword and shield
Hildebrand recognises his son
He hints that he might be his dad of old; offers peace and a crown of gold
Says it ain’t right to kill your kin
Chorus
Hadubrand thinks it’s just a ruse. The old man’s chicken or he’s trying to use
his gold to make me lower my guard
And just like in that song by Cash, there’s a battle royale and swords clash
but we don’t find out who wins out in the end…
Chorus
Tsss I missed this a heads up would be nice next time (especially since I recently told you that I currently spend my time differently…) when I know through you someone goes to jail … why do I rate that chance as quite high
But
will listen to your song later, because on the phone there is mostly a strange and soft crackling sound what bothers me…two 3 songs also totally missed
Greetings
Edit 2: One is playing while reading and that sounds nice the versie you make from it
And another song i see …what the heck
Apologies, my friend.
I just assume you read anything I write and these days, I post most things to my learning log.
I just edited all the blurb above, as I had forgotten I had shared the whole Copenhagen background in Birth of a Band. The grey cells are becoming darker…
Well that was another jolly nice romp sir. Good to see you sticking with the plot tinkering to make it your own. Does your last comment mean I don’t have to read BOAB ? I was just heading in that general direction ?
